I had to change the gas bottle in my 3 panel heater from a 9kg to a 12. The supplier assured me it will fit which it does but when I try to switch it on, only the pilot light comes on. No gas is flowing to the panels. Can somebody please assist me.

It should work provided the connector is the same size. Maybe an empty gas bottle or faulty heater.

Could also be overfilled. Vent some of the gas outside.

I had this issue which I mentioned in another thread. Take the bottle outside and open the valve for a few seconds and try again. Keep doing this and it will work. All in all I let out just under 1kg of gas.

Doubt over filled, this would cause liquid not gas to come out, and your heater will turn into a jet engine and try go to places.

As mentioned, just take outside and bleed a little.

What happens, mostly on new bottles, the initial air is trapped in the cylinder on first fill this is on top of the liquid gas, which will "dilute" the gas and cause poor burning.

Normally a short 10 second blast in the open will be sufficient.

Make certain no open flames around you at the time.

Air in the hose most likely. The pilot sounds like a jet engine and burns much higher till you release the knob and it dies right?

This causes that little pin not to heat up sufficiently to allow the pilot flame to continue burning. A few restarts will do the trick (well it does on mine) (or quickly release and repress the knob if your works like mine which has to be press in and turned to 1 for ignition)

Many thanks for all the advice. It is a brand new 12 kg bottle. I vented it for about 10sec and hey presto the heater now works. Great forum.

A warning: check the regulations re gas if in a house or flat, as if there is a fire and an insurance claim be sure you are legal.
A flat was x1 only 9 kg gas.....not larger or more...ie not one for stove and another for heater.

And if you have extra bottles in the cage outside?

In a flat, you can have a max of a 9kg gas cylinder on an internal installation, like your stove cylinder in the cupboard.

Max gas stored on any private property is 100kg.

A roll about heater is not an installation.

On roll about heaters, those are the biggest killer in the gas industry. People take them into their rooms, fall asleep, all oxygen gets burned up, flame is below the bed level, they don't wake up.

Never take it in to a bed room, use in lounge, and make certain that their is a window open. Don't lie on couch while in use.

^ Donald please correct me:
As I understood it a few years back, then regs for a flat were: 1x 9kg cylinder, period.
Not: 1 for stove or hob installation and another for a movable gas heater.
Also the installation (stove or hob) to be inspected and re-certified every 5 years.

This is how I understood the gas regs for a flat.
Is this current and correct?

A max of 9kg is allowed to be inside a flat, or 19kg inside a house, but you can store additional externally.

Yes, meant to be checked every 5 years, but a lot of the sans regs are on words like "should", which creates grey areas.
