Hey guys, sorry for the product punt (mods please feel free to delete if this is deemed inappropriate), but I thought this might be of interest to a lot of people. My company's first shipment of gas generators is arriving late next week. To start we're offering 5.5KVA LPG and natural gas generators.

The LPG units run off a standard gas cylinder, while the natural gas units can be plugged into the gas mains at your house. PM me if you're interested.

Maybe a price estimate here? I realise it is a punt, but it is so topical, hopefully the mods will be kind.

Maybe there should be a dedicated thread for all forumites who have relevant power related products/services to offer other forumites. I guess there's always the classifieds section.

Putting up a classified ad now, actually. Prices on there.

So how does it work? Like a little steam engine, huffing and puffing in the back yard?

I'm also keen to hear the answer and the price, but I guess that it's a regular internal combustion engine driven genie that's adapted to run on gas and not petrol, like many car's (particularly taxis) in the far east.

Exactly right on how they operate. Check the MyBroadband Classifieds for pricing.

What does this equate to in R&cents?

o Consumption - approx 0.3m3 per Kwh

Eish, they're a lil pricey... but very very interesting.

Why don't I have gas mains at home in Durban.. *sulk*

Fsck that... I've moved to jhb and I'm blerry moving back home...

I needs me the beach and stuff...

I can't find the add in Classifieds.

The gas genie's will at least be much greener, but I guess the noise pollution is still a problem.

yea cost to run would very good

also what is the noise level

i would be very interested in this

will it run a compressor? 150l

Would fit in nicely with the planned home gas installation. Power, water heating, cooking, some lights and Braai?

Anybody got anything against above.

Scale of economics please. Cost to run.
What is the main differences between the two apart from the price and looks.

The LPG unit uses about 0.32kg of gas per kWh. Assuming you use it all pretty much full load, you'd use about 1.6kg of gas per hour. A 9kg cylinder would last just over 5.5 hours of using the gennie at max output. Assuming that a 9kg cylinder costs R150, it would cost you about R27.00 per hour to run at max.

A natural gas genset uses about 0.3 m3 per kWh. A 5.5KVA genset would use a maximum of about 1.5 m3 an hour at roughly R4.50 per cubic meter. That's R6.75 an hour.

Based on the above, a natural gas generator has much lower running costs than an LPG unit.
