Hi,

Wanted to know if anybody had a gastroscopy (or other scope) already done in hospital. Were there other patients, how long did you wait and how much was it? I had one done at Vincent Palotti.. admitted at 8:30.. moved to gastroscope unit at around 9:30..doctor pitched up after 10.. there were 3 patients before me...dr. started at around 11 only to get to me after 12. So in total almost a 4 hour wait at a private hospital where i paid R1700 to the hospital and R1000 to the dr.

Wanted to know if this is the norm as i can understand it taking so long at public hospital but for private, where you paying private fees, i think it's def. inefficient.

Thanks.

Definitely not the norm. That would drive me mental seeing as you can't eat or drink since the night before.
Next time try Dr Abdul Karriem Cariem at Kingsbury Hospital. I booked a week in advance for 8am appointment. Was completely done by 9am. Plus Discovery Coastal Core covered everything. Didn't pay a cent.

You can do this as an in room procedure, so you don't have to be admitted etc. Much faster

Four hours doesn't sound all that bad.

Often doctors are late because they had to attend to real unscheduled issues.

The only way for your process to have worked any faster would have been to have 4 doctors and one for each patients. This is firstly not really sustainable, but even if it was it would cost a fortune.

Medicine doesn’t keep office hours and set times.
Patients believe that they are the only patient for their doctor and is goofing around before seeing you.
What if the doctor was delayed earlier with an emergency or rounds. What if the earlier patients took longer than expected due to come complication.

Agree. I can understand the unforeseen that dr's need to attend too but surely the hospital/dr. can be more efficient in planning the whole admission and procedure process. I mean why do you have to be there that early and just wait, and if you know you going to have several patients then rather schedule different time slots not all at once. Eg. if dr. comes and starts at 10 i could have been admitted at 9:30 and done by 10:30.

ps there were no complications. apparently there were only 3 beds and i was patient number 4...so had to wait for one to become available.

That is why there is medical aid...But yeh i have had that experience...

What time were you scheduled for? For all you knew it was meant to be 10:00 and didn't work out.

They just said it's on a first come first serve basis. Didn't even know that happens in private. Apparently some other dr. also 'snatched' the theatre room which caused further delay. I mean...really now.. private hosp. saying first come first serve basis, another dr. using our room, not enough beds.. expected more from a private hospital/specialist.

Anyways i'm not that upset. procedure done and i'm still walking. was just curious to know if my experience is normal for private treatment.
