Johannesburg - Microsoft founder Bill Gates on Monday touted technology as a solution to Africa's development problems, saying his organisation aimed to boost development on the world's poorest continent.

The computer billionaire was in Cape Town where he toured Aids and tuberculosis clinics and made remarks ahead of a two-day Microsoft Government Leaders' Forum, which he will attend as well as former US president Bill Clinton.

Gates is here? Clinton is here? I want to protest Telkom!

Gates coming by to plug microsoft products in africa - how thoughtful of him - but shame, he mustn't expect his product to take off with telkom's prices!

I think gates shoud forget SA - there is SITA installing linux on their systems.... and the DoC signing agreements with Microsoft for discounts. Makes you think who is getting the kickbacks!

I think Clinton is here to promote cuban cigars :-P

My personal opinion of Clinton isn't very high. Gate's is also not spending his money wisely through his various charities, but convincing a wealthy American that his money would be much better spent through spending it all on EDUCATION initiatives rather than wasting it on disease control is futile.

EDUCATING the 3rd world might actually stifle most of the suffering, whilst disease control cannot make any meaningful contribution until people are educated about the importance of washing hands and cleanliness.

EDUCATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE! The cornerstones of society!

Education is needed, but disease kills educated and uneducated people without discrimination.

I love it... I read in the paper how Durban muni wants to go open source and create job blah, blah fishpaste. and then last week run an article on the new Microsoft supported Center

Billy Gates has a lot of time on his hands since stepping out of the Microsoft daily operations. So, like most bored billionaires with celebrity status, he wants to hang with some disadvantaged people, donate a free computer or 2, yak-yak on about how much more important technology is than a loaf of bread and cheap ADSL, and meet Nelson Mandela for tea and Oreos. Lekker man!

But it spreads mainly due to a lack of education...

Educated people have less kids and put less pressure on food resources. The advantages of putting education and infrastructure above everything else is clear, yet folks like gates are looking for immidiate glory. Education takes years! Vaxinating hungry kids, gets you in the newspaper TODAY!

He's still working as full time chairman until June '08 - http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2006/jun06/06-15CorpNewsPR.mspx

I could be wrong but isn't the majority of his donations going into malaria research and prevention?

Dear Mr Gates
Malaria comes from mosquitos, cured by quinine - research over.
