Johannesburg - The Gauteng 10111 telephone lines are down, the provincial police said on Thursday.

"The public is asked to have the telephone number of their local police stations' client service centre at hand.

"This is the number people with crime emergencies have to phone until further notice," said Superintendent Eugene Opperman.

It's believed that the lines went down after the storm on Wednesday night, which caused power outages in most parts of the province, he said.

"Telkom technicians are working on the problem and a further media statement will be issued once the 10111 centre can again take calls from the public."

Good luck people! Its every man for himself out there!

WHat does it matter really? It took them 45 minutes to respond anyway...

Maybe the police are winning the war on crime, they went from 9000 calls a minute, to 0 in a day. Amazing!

I _HIGHLY_ doubt this article is accurate.

If it reads "A Gauteng 10111" station then I'll believe it, but definitely not THE main Midrand Call-centre.

Anyone whose been inside the Midrand 10111 Call centre will know exactly just how jacked up it actually is. It's one of the few centres in our country that is world class - and calls + call takers are monitored every second.

Except if the telephone lines get taken down... not much you can do, eh?

You can have the most advanced call centre in the world, but if the people who operate it are incompetent, or just plain don't care about doing their jobs, it will be useless.

It is wise to keep your local police station's number close to hand. (And/or telephone as the case may be.)

The call centre was knocked out by that big storm the other night, afaik, and was up and running again quite quickly.
