The Gauteng housing department has evicted 51 families from RDP houses they were illegally occupying in Winterveldt north of Pretoria, housing MEC Ntombi Mekgwe said on Thursday.
"These people are always coming up with desperate attempts to jump the waiting list by invading RDP houses. We are going to make sure that such attempts by these people fail to yield expected results of beating the queue," she said in a statement.
"We are quite aware that people have long been waiting for their RDP houses, but there is no need to resort to illegal occupation."
The families were evicted over the Easter weekend after the department obtained an eviction order from the High Court in Pretoria.
Mekgwe said the illegal occupants moved into RDP houses before they were allocated to the rightful beneficiaries, which was now being done.
The demand for housing in Gauteng was huge and the province was committed to building more RDP houses.
"We would like to urge our people to be patient with us and we will deliver on our commitment," she said.
