Gauteng freeway expansion with more e-tolls delayed

e-tolls .... like taking a dump into a toilet that wont flush.

The e-toll expansion - like taking another dump in the same toilet ....

Eish ....

Who are the shmucks still paying R60 million every month? They need to get with the programme.

Anyone here think we need more highways at this time?

According to the report, Sanral said “new phases of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project remain on hold until a funding model can be finalised”.

The report stated that “the dispensation unveiled by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa in May was not enough to sustain improvements”.

In other words SANRAL is bankrupt.
Just kill this beast before more money is wasted.

So the backhands from Kapsch and others seems so attractive, they will do anything to push it through.

Absolutely, if you look at what phase 2 offers, Freeways like the N14 to Krugersdorp needs upgrading plus the freeway going from the East of Pretoria through Midrand to the West Rand will be a brilliant. There is many other freeways needing upgrading outside the centre of Gauteng.

Well, if the ANC could have actually read stats, they would have seen e-tolls does not work. History already had the facts. People told them this would happen. Now we are paying for their mistakes again. Rinse and repeat.

There is work needed...we can't look at the road infrastructure objectively and say they're sufficient in quality and capacity. Ultimately, this necessary work and creates jobs etc. that the economy needs.

The issue is the funding model and the lack of explanation from Government of where the existing petrol-linked "taxes" are going.

That is very true, but what those upgrades don't need is an ill conceived and inefficient funding model. Rather bump the fuel levy and upgrade the roads.

Chances are fairly good that there is some inflation in the numbers they purport. That and it will include local government, SOEs and the like.

Personally, I have said that if I got an account I would pay it. In saying this, I did get one bill soon after it all started, which I paid. Since then I never received another. Also, I stay off the tolled roads in and around Joburg if I can.

This ^ I agree with.

If I may add to this, traffic volumes on all e-tolled routes remains bumper to bumper during peak times. The M1 and M2 also need attention, as these are main arterial routes from N to S and from W to E (through the southern regions of the city).

Upgrading - use the fuel levy, we have already shown you can upgrade the 180km of freeways for R20 billion (which is what GFIP Phase 1 cost) every year while still having another R30 to R40 billion left per year, which is greatly above SANRALs current R11 billion budget allocation.

New freeways - built them and toll them all you want (if no one uses them its your own fault for building unwanted items or pricing them incorrectly)
