We (2 adults / 3 kids) will be driving down to the Western Cape in the holiday. I'm not keen to drive down in one go, so am looking at stayover options somewhere between say Bloemfontein and Colesberg. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions at Gariep?
we stayed here in July when we went up to the Kruger park:

Simple, clean and they have apartment options for family. Also small kitchen which helps if you want to make quick simple burgers or something like that.

The other option, a bit more expensive is:

Make sure to go check out the dam at the end of the town, it's quite something.

I remembered my trip. George is nice to break the journey also the beach alone that.

Don't have a specific place but when we drive with our two kids and it's split like this, we always try do a longer stint on day one and leave as little as possible for day 2.
So assuming a what, 14, hour drive at least, I'd look for a place 8-9h away say, leaving the shorter portion for the next day. My kids are always up for that first day but after 6 hours they realise how long the journey actually is and get a bit whiny but it's manageable. Telling them the next morning they have a further 8 hours, that ain't fun.
It's why I'd do Gariep (or even Bloem) coming back as it's closer to JHB than CT; if I could push it I'd try get to Beaufort West going down, around 10 hours, leaving a much shorter stretch for the next day.
If your children are older and this ain't a problem then yeah, find the prettiest place.
Just something to think about.

If you leave JHB early u can do 1night in Beaufort West (+-900km)Push to CT the next day. (+- 500km)
That is basically 2full days on the road with fuel stops, etc.

+1 for getting some distance in on the first day. If you leave 4-500km for the last day you can arrive by lunch time and still have energy to do something in the afternoon instead of wasting 2 days just traveling.

Die Klei Pot in Colesberg is perfect for your needs.

They also have excellent and cheap food.

If you want to take it even more easy just hit the R62 down to De Rust and stay at De Rusty Farm for another night before venturing on down.

Beat the boring highway.

River Destiny at Gariep also definitely an option but almost certainly more expensive.

The Parentals have stayed at the Klei Pot before as well, they were very happy
