Gautrain boosts property prices

Johannesburg - Since the establishment of the Gautrain station in Rosebank, northern Johannesburg, property prices in the area have rocketed.

Property analyst company Lightstone said: “In the past five years, Rosebank has seen a positive inflation, some of which could be attributed to the Gautrain.

"After the station was opened in Rosebank, property prices close to it achieved an additional 2.5% growth compared with prices for property in the surrounding areas that are further away.”

Randburg CBD is trying to revive itself. A station would really help it. Plus then I could walk there to get to work.

That as well, plus some major office parks (eg R21 Corporate Park etc).

Then I would not mind using a bicycle to pedal to the closest station and taking the train all the way to work.

In the next 10 to 15 years, they've been planning it. Would love one as one of the stations is planned to be about a kilometer from home and on the way to my sons school, wife can drop me off there and I can catch a train to work.

The biggest challenge with the Gautrain are the feeder busses, as they also sit in traffic.

Sure, but when people start catching the gautrain from west rand to sandton, traffic on Republic road, Jan Smuts and William Nicol is going to take a big dive.

That's one unfortunate thing - but if they can expand and do away with the feeder busses....

Only time will tell. Maybe you'll need feeder busses for some suburbs and the such for now.

I was watching grand tour last night and watched the episode about the Airtrain.

Surely this could be an option in place of bus feeders, the train wouldn't need to go as fast as the Gautrain.

The platforms and the tracks could be raised above street level.

Now obviously I am not expecting it to go through into the suburbs, but for example, here in Pretoria CBD it would work a treat.

That and with the recent property valuation, I prefer my property to be less attractive if I'm not planning on selling.. As my R&T's are gonna shoot through the roof
