I also wanted to ask those people who already had their moment of glory: did you make use of the feeder buses and is that part of it working well ?

I went to Sandton Station - colleague parked outside - we asked nicely and the guys there let us. Dash down the stairs, turn left and there is a bank of machines.

Didn't ride the bus but I've seen a few of them.

LOL - but I don't think there is enough time to have a drink.

I think that they were trying to discourage food and drinks - it keeps the trains cleaner.
 
If I want to go from the Airport to Sandton and back to the Airport again this weekend, how much will that cost me?

Will I be able to buy a return ticket from the Airport ticketing station?

What about parking?
 
I rode the Gautrain too, like 4 months ago, for free, it was pretty boring though, at least they gave me a free meal :p

R200 for a return trip, R10 for the card, and parking should set you back R9.50.

AFAIK a trip to Rhodes Field will be about R21. Go figure.

I wish mods would start deleting irrelevant posts...it's bloody infuriating :mad:

We have been decrying the lack of decent public transport and now that we have the Gautrain some people see it as an opportunity for cheap political points scoring.:confused:

Can't we all bask in the ambiance of this world class achievement regardless of colour, political affilliations, etc?

I did some preliminary numerical modeling analysis of excavation for the tunneling and support design requirements. Tunneling at shallow depths is tricky because you dealing to low strength rock, groundwater and weathered soil. So, this was the 1st for SA and I'm glad we pulled it off.

. This must be the first purpose built mass transportation measure which ends up getting used for it's unintended purpose. ie. Joyrides for Joburgers which means little to no seats for the poor tourists. They'll be green with envy seeing you locals swoosh past them-- as they sit in their hotel vans in traffic.

Nah, plenty of trains and no tourists.

As for taking joyrides - if you knew what we've been going through with the road closures and diversions because of this train you'd also want to see what all the fuss was about. And it being awesome only helps.

It was built for South Africans. Tourists are welcome to use it as well.
