Gautrain Fact Sheet

I'm sure a lot of planning has gone into the security of the passengers on the Gautrain. I think that this is one project that will work. No doubt everyone will try it, and those that like it or can make good use of it, will use the rapid rail link if fares are decent.

It has to do a lot to make me use it instead of my car. There's 2 main issues why I'm thinking I won't use it : cost and time

Cost : I'm paying roughly R140,00pd for my transport per day (installment, petrol, insurance). I'd hope Gautrain could cut this in half. Right now, at least I still have a (depreciating) asset worth a little, so to make me stand up I'd like a R50,00 max.

Timing :
It take's me about 1.15 min - 1:30 min to get to work. With the driving to a bus stop, parking, paying for bus/train, Gautraining to your destination and ten disembarking - I doubt I'd save much time.

If the feeder networks work nicely (like buses every 15 minutes, the whole system is safe and the taxi industry doesn't decide to throw their toys) I'll happily use the service.

Even if a return ticket from JHB to PTA costs R100, the savings of not having to own a second car will make it worth while.

Hopefully one day there will be a Southern leg to the rail as well.

BWAHAHAHAHA

Gautrain commuter fares will be lower than the perceived cost of using a car

perceived cost? vs? actual cost? some explanation of what they mean and exactly how they're deriving this would be useful. as it stands it looks like a big hole to climb through and charge what the **** they want.

OP said:
approximately 6.7 million cubic metres of earth will be moved around and reworked

k seriously I've been wondering about this, where are they putting all this dirt?

OP said:
About 93 000 jobs will be created during construction

so in 2-3 years we can look forward to a spike in crime as thousands and thousands of newly unemployed former rail and stadium builders join the millions already looking for work.

I hate to be negative about such a great project, but I dont see how this will work.

JHB is very spread out - not like cities in europe... which means that unless u work or live 5 min away from a train station - you would most probably have to take some sort of bus or taxi to your work or home when you get off at a station...

Now this is fine in countries where the population is actually civilised and not comparable to barbarians. You expect me to get onto a PUBLIC transport bus or taxi with my laptop, cellphone, wallet, watch, and I will make it alive to work? This is in a country where people are literally KILLED for cellphones and a few hundred bucks on a daily basis?

There is no trust... no safety... Law and Order is paramount for something like this to work.

Yea right.... enjoy your gautrain.. ill be sticking to my own car thanks...

The Gautrain is not meant for you. In more ways than one.
