Gautrain vs Metrorail prices

An analysis by MyBroadband shows that Gautrain's new discounted products for lower-income households cost about twice the most expensive fares on the country's biggest commuter rail service.

For many years, the Automobile Association of South Africa has criticised the Gautrain for costing the taxpayers billions of rand and not being affordable for commuters who cannot afford to travel by car.

Feels too complex- and is the cheaper rail still running?

not to mention the rail network size, gautrain is quite limited, while metrorail is a lot larger.

again, Gautrain was built for the world cup, not to solve any sort of long term traffic problems,
one could almost think of the gautrain like the Train in Sun City the one that takes you into the resort itself,

nobody would think of that as a mass transit system in any respect, its more limited in scope,
the gautrain is simply a bigger version of that, but still not nearly enough to solve mass transit.

I mean they could have had 4 stations only, and it still would have been too limited.
park station, rosebank,sandton and malboro

lol comparing gautrain to metro trains.
And lol my phone auto carrots gautrain to gay train.

Gautrain just another ANC failure. Who would have thought.

So much for affordable public transport that's not cheap and still a burden on tax payers. Typical ANC

If it was cheap alternative to Taxi's atleast I wouldn't have minded.

I love the Gautrain and I think it's still reasonably priced. I have appreciated not having to find parking in Sandton or Rosebank for years and I don't miss the stress of N1 driving. I only wish it would run 24/7.

Well duh. Of course Gautrain costs more than Metrorail. Next you'll tell us Shoprite is cheaper than Checkers.

The Gautrain was started in 1998, it had nothing to do with the World Cup apart from the part to accelerate one line for it.

This is only looking at the cost. I know the article list that it is more premium, but I would also look at the time spend on each. How much faster is the Gautrain over that distances to get to the area. What is the convenience of each? I haven't used a metro in Pretoria<->Joburg route ever, have used it in Cape Town.

so what was its purpose, another glaring failure of the ANC? or a legitimate need to deal with peak time traffic from JHB to PTA,
or like everything else construction hurried along during the world cup, but since then stalled and never restarted.

Public transport doesn't fix traffic. It just gives commuters an alternative to sitting in traffic. See London and New York traffic while having extensive subway systems.

yes and it took how long to build, with only one line completed, as compared to the deathrail of metrorail with everything falling apart, signals not working a simple 30 min journey taking 3 hours and death and destruction on the rails.

I mean imagine SA had subways, times everything 100 times.

Honestly I would much rather ride the Gautrain. The Stations are better, the service is better, its more comfortable. I wish the Cape can get rid of Metrorail and design better stations and an MRT

Singapore and tap to pay, compared running to the other side of the station only to find the ticketoffice is closed and then they slap you with a fine. If anyone had any brains, they would rebuild the stations all closed for the trains, allow for the cards or on device app for tap to pay to use the trains and busses in the area, including all take away food items at the minishops at the station. Do note though that no food may be eatten on the train, but in dedicated eating spaces at the station.

And then make the stations look exciting, and the trains too. The Japanese are best at this
