Lol. Nothing rush about Jhb rush hour traffic. Assuming you are on the road during the bumper to bumper times I would guess a scooter would be pretty good since everyone else would effectivly be stationary.

Any other time and you wouldent stand a chance.

Would you catch a train these days? I wouldn't unless I had a police escort! I used to catch the train to college and other places about 10 years ago and even then I was scared of being mugged or being thrown off the train by criminals.

The "scooter or not" question could change quite a bit in the next few years.

At present I will not consider it, as I consider it far too dangerous.

But in the next few years, the number of scooters/motorbikes is expected to increase, and car driver awareness of these critters on the road will also increase. This might increase "bike safety", and I might just consider using such a 2-wheeler instead of my current 4-wheels.

If I have it correct, a 125cc "bike" is allowed on the highways, and by the time the super-train is operational, the N1 might be filled with scooters etc and there migt be no real need for the Gautrain.

It is impossible to tell what will happen. But I have my doubts if the Gautrain will do 100 000 passengers per day after a few years of operation.

My feel is that a secure, safe, clean, not overloaded rail system following the N1 between Pretoria and JHB with stations at every offramp would have been a much cheaper and better option. Maybe a longer ride, but it fits in with the current infrastructure and has more stations for growthpoints.

I also wouldn't consider a scooter for travelling long distances on highways etc. But if you live within a 5 - 10km radius of the orrifice, heck why not? Can take back roads etc. Even reduce yourself to a one car family imagine the cost savings

6 lane highway still doesn't provide the commuters with alternatives. Provide decent access from the R21 to join up with the M1 in the Sandton area and the same with the R28 (Krugersdorp) to join up around William Nicol. Instead of the current mess at Buccleugh and surrounds, you then have 3 major routes between JHB and Pta, which will lighten the load on the N1.

I agree with Kei, the most important issue after price is going to be security. Also, feeder shuttle service is a must as our office areas are not as dense as overseas.
