The authorities in Gaza say the Palestinian territory's only power station has shut down because of a lack of fuel.

The closure is believed to be caused by a shortage in fuel being supplied through smuggling tunnels from Egypt.

Power cuts, already common, are expected to increase. The station provides around 30-40% of Gaza's electricity.

The rest of the electricity used by the territory is supplied by Israel.

The Gaza Power Company said the strip would soon be "swimming in a sea of darkness".

Supplies of fuel smuggled into the territory have diminished due to the recent Egyptian political unrest.

Many families and businesses have private generators to avoid the blackouts. But fuel for those is also hard to come by.

This week long queues can be seen outside petrol stations with people worried about filling up their cars.

A statement from the power station called on Egypt to allow more fuel to pass through the tunnels. It also blamed Israel's continuing blockade of the Palestinian territory.

Israel and Egypt imposed sanctions on Gaza after the Islamist movement Hamas came to power in 2007.

Last year Egypt eased restrictions allowing people to travel more easily, but all legal trade is still forbidden and the tunnel industry continues to thrive.

Yeh, whats up with Palestine AKA Jordan, Saudi Barbaria and Egypt - can they not manage to fuel a pathetic power station - I mean they can't still be blaming Mubarak for keeping Gaza closed, so whats the excuse today?

Ummm did you read the article or not? I would hate to have to highlight why. Perhaps read the article and figure it out on your own.

Come now, do we have to do all the work for you? Reading is a wonderful tool that you should start to use bud :p

Who is running egypt now bud? What party has been elected to run the country? You may need to google and read some stuff though so i don't expect an answer.

I read just fine, doesn't explain why the Arab League and Egyptian military makes zero effort to assist the Palestinians - you can always find an excuse, easier to lay the blame with Israel.

I assume the Egyptian military is also in Israels back pocket therefore fuel supplies have been blocked and when the muslim brotherhood comes to power and the situation in Gaza remains the same, then you will find some excuse as well.

Bottom line is that in 60 odd years the Arabs have done about 0 to assist the Palestinians as it suits their agenda not to.

Exactly. A Palestine that is always being picked on by big bad Israel and big bad USA is so much more useful for stoking anti-West sentiment, than a Palestine that is self-sufficient.

Congratulations to Hamas for continuing to martyr the Palestinian people in their backward crusade from the dark ages....

Israel has a list of what is allowed in and what is allowed out of Gaza. All borders are Israeli controlled (whether directly or by proxy), so its not a sovereign country but a homeland of Israel.

Can you explain to us how those arab countries would get the supplies into gaza. Let's say iran wanted to send gaza fuel for running the plant or whatever, how would they get it into gaza?

They might get it in without any problems if they removed the crates containing rockets and explosives from the shipment.

Oh like 60% of their electricity supply.

Care to stand in the streets and Cairo and tell them they're just Israeli proxies.

you realize those get in through tunnels right. Not much need to try get it across the borders and struggle when you can ship it underground.

Kuk excuse
