Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed that a number of cars available locally are affected by the carmaker’s current global recall.
About 90 of the 29 299 cars being recalled worldwide to correct a problem with the gearshift are in South Africa. The problem relates to the gear shift of the six-speed manual gearbox that could make it difficult to change gears.
"The cars in question are all our models for 2010 and 2011 that have a six-speed manual gear box," company spokesman Per-Aake Froesberg told AFP.
"We have identified that the ball-joints hand cylinder pin on the gear shift lever may be mounted (incorrectly), which may lead to the ball-joint coming loose, which would imply that the driver will not be able to change gears," he explained.
“Models affected in South Africa are the C30 hatchback, S40 sedan and XC60 SUV,” said Volvo Car SA spokesperson Astrid de la Rey.
“Customers are being contacted and there will be no cost involved for them,” she added.
The local subsidiary has not received any complaints regarding the matter, De la Rey said.
