What is the viability of this :-

Get an international hosting account, say an el-cheapo one in the US.
Make sure you have enough privileges to install bittorrent (it would be a linux server with Python enabled)

Write a web backend that initialises bittorrent downloads to the server and allows you to stream the file to your computer via HTTP ?

Does that sound crazy ?
Is it possible ?

The fact that bittorrent via ADSL in South Africa seems shaped to hell and gone for the majority of folks leads to this kind of desperation.

I'm fairly sure it could be done, the question is, are there any hosting companies overseas that would allow you to do this ? ;)

I have a couple of dedicated servers that cost me US$149 per month with 1000gb transfer. There is spare capacity. I would love to use one of them to improve my own d/ls.

Having said that, any bright sparks out there who can come up with a viable script/server to run on my servers to avoid shaping can have access to 30gb or more for free.

PM me with your ideas.

not to shoot the idea down, but even if it were possible you would need gig's worth of space on the hosted server (not too cheap i would think)
of course the space would be for all those patches and linux distro's :p

Splint3r: Space is cheap and plentiful.

ic: It wouldn't be for torrents - mainly to avoid shaping on other applications - and nobody in that thread has answered the question as yet.

I think Pupa and I have the same requirements, so

Pupa: If you find anything out please let me know and I will do likewise.

Why would you want this? Wait till monday and come join our FreeProxy :)

Allready getting great responses and the beta testing is still busy.

bb-Matt what you have just described there is the same as Slimothy's torrent flux.. You choose the torrent the server d/l's it and you d/l via http once its done..

I had a look at torrentflux with the idea of installing it on my webspace, but it requires python as far as I could tell.

Clipse - looking forward to trying it ! :D

My P2P network of choice is eDonkey/Kademlia and while I don't have ADSL (still on ISDN :( ) I have found a way to make my experience a little better.

Basically I have a friend in the UK with unlimited 2 meg ADSL. He runs eMule on his server machine and I can connect to it via the web interface and place my downloads in the queue. I then just grab the files via FTP when they're done, works fantastically. I imagine you could do the same with any web host if you have a VPS or dedicated server.

if you want to get passed packet shaping yeah, torrent flux is ok but the real way to get back control is using a tunnel, ssh tunnel, proxy tunnel, whatever and make it on a high priority port and if the system as packet shaping you probably wanna look at encrypting the stream.

if you do this you traffic is ace,

you -> ssh on some server -> socks proxy on the same server

if you just wanna get around port shaping or international blocking

you - socks proxy

socks is just cool like that cuz its a multipurpose proxy, not just web, also the daddy of all the shaping bypassing techniques......... GRE TUNNELING

because google is better, supports boolean searches and most importantly, ding ding ding, you can link the search results

erm, if its torrents you are after, what did you wish to download? easynews offers you 20GB per month for $10, and all downloads are http, or nntp if you so wish, but those http downloads literally FLY! i use it for tv eps.

newsgroups are slow though and $10 is what, 70 bucks? well on torrent flux setups on this forum you can get a 30Gb account for less and for a few bucks more a 50GB account
