Hi Peeps

Recently upgraded my PC to a i5-system (8GB ddr4 RAM) with my old Geforce 660ti as GPU which is suffering in the graphics department. Barely 30FPS in Hellblade

I want to upgrade my GPU, specifically looking at the 1060 6GB Nvidia range, but the mining craze has pushed the prices way up. Do you think these prices will drop/stabilize later in the year and I should wait to upgrade (13th check in DEC) OR will the current trend continue and GPU's getting more expensive and I should buy now (with Zuptas the rand-exchange may hit the roof)?

Any advice will be appreciated!

Upgrade when you can mate no one can guarentee when stock will arrive Bitcoin mining is still going strong in the country.

Prices are actually normalising this month to what they used to be before the craze hit. There are a lot of NVIDIA cards available at close to MSRP locally.

Wootware even has a sale on Zotac cards that brings the price under what it was when the shortage started.

Buying now is a good idea.

Buying now is a good idea.

I feel the same way. Everything seems to point towards GPU prices increasing in the near future.

Rand will probably lose ground as well as memory prices skyrocketing which will most likely impact the prices of GPUs.

Thanks all for confirming my suspicion. :)

It seems the mining is moving to 6GB cards as 3GB is not big enough to handle some of the bit coin algorithms anymore. I was looking at the RX580 as well but the general consensus seems these cards are on par performance wise, what pushed me to the Nvidia was the power consumption-seems AMD is a bit power hungry.

I bought a MSI GTX1060 6GB two months ago and I highly recommend it ... it cost me R5 200 or thereabouts, so not cheap, but it was actually a good deal at the time.

I was initially hoping to get an Asus variant, but that was even more expensive. For what it's worth the MSI has been great, and I've found articles online saying it's actually the one to get (it's very quiet because its two fans only activate if the temp rises above 60 degrees and it stays cool). Also LEDs, looks awesome.
