I am looking at upgrading from my 8600gt to either the GeForce GT240, 512MB 128Bit DDR5 or GeForce GT240, 1GB 128Bit DDR3.
The price differance is almost nothing.
The question is, is the faster DDR5 memory (512MB) better than double (1GB) DDR3 memory?

(And before people start with rather buy another card, I have a strict budget and this is the limit that I can spend).

How much are you looking at for either of those cards? I'm just wanting to know if you can get a better deal elsewhere.

What resolution do you play at?

I am getting the card at cost :) ... at the moment at 1280 X 1024. I will hopefully soon be getting a better screen, then looking at 1920 x 1080.

I can get a HD 5570 for less than the GT 240 , but is a slower card. Next on the line is a HD5670, but that is almost 30% more in cost, and the budget is blown.

Let me guess, you're getting from Rectron? Their 5670 pricing is crazy compared to other suppliers. Other suppliers have the 5670 and GT240 at much more of a similar price. Most forumites here will strongly suggest you go for the 5670, it's a card up from the GT240 and is DX11 so you are future-proofed.

If I was you, I'd consider saving for an extra month to get something more capable, such as a 5770 or a GTS 250. Those cards are really much more powerful and future proof than the GT240. The problem with the GT240 is that it just wont last, whereas the others will.

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon, but I'd really also recommend holding out and getting a better card. The GT240 really is rubbish, you can find 4850s and GTS250s now for around R1200, have a look online.

Geforce GTS 250 512MB DDR3, D-sub, DVI,HDMI - R 999 excl. R 1,138 incl.
Geforce GTS 250 1GB DDR3, D-Sub,DVI,HDMI - R 1 109 excl. R 1,264 incl.

XFX ATI Radeon 4850 512MB DDR3 - Std Edition - (Dual DVI + TV Out) R1,203.00

But to answer your question, its much better to go for the faster memory. The amount of memory is only important if you're wanting to play higher resolutions. 1920 is about the max res that a 512mb card can handle properly, but to be honest dude, if you get a GT240 you're not going to be hitting that kind of res at a decent fps anyway.

Some wise person on MyBB once said:"The extra price irks you now. The lack of performance irks you forever." Can't remember who it was or when but it was echoing loudly in my ears when I bought a 5850 instead of 5770.. Haven't looked back!

For some reasons outside of my control I can’t get the card right now...I have experienced my version of karma as many times before.
Let me explain. When me or my wife wants to buy anything and it is out of stock, broken or can’t be done there usually is a great mystical power at work. Some call it the force, others call it Divine intervention and some call it dumb luck, but when it beats me with a baseball bat I try to listen.
Because when we tried to fight against the will of the universe in the past, I either get shot at by robbers - yeah it did happen, or in the more subtle cases the damn card won’t work.

So in that spirit I am going to hold off for a few months and then I will have a look around. Hey, I might be able to get a much better card by then.

So thanks for everyone’s input.
