I think it is based on this scripture. Deuterenomy 12.

Just be firmly resolved not to eat the blood,h because the blood is the life,ai and you must not eat the lifeb with the flesh. 24 You must not eat it. You should pour it out on the ground like water.j 25 You must not eat it, so that it may go well with you and your children after you, because you are doing what is right in Jehovah’s eyes.

Please note the part in bold. With science we have learned about all the nasty things you can get in blood. The main reason is doing what is good in Jehova's eyes.

The interpretation of eating you can look up total parenteral nutrition.
