I am done with my current ISP Axxess after 9days and counting with dismal connectivity and a degrading linespeed. I am looking to switch to possibly Vodacome. It is going to have be an LTE/4G type offering because of the area I reside in. There is no fibre out here I have an LTE router already and have so far only generally used around 200 to 300gigs a month between me and my wife. At least a 10Mbs line so I can comfortably play Diablo 3 and tryout 4. Browsing the Vodacom website is frustrating when you have to wade through endless pades of PS5 qnd other devices even when you try searching fo browse for sim only deals

Okay lets deconstruct this.

The internet connection is used by you and your wife, you want to be able to play video games but what does she use the internet for?

Secondly, LTE like other types of consumer services is a best effort service and prone to congestion.

I'm assuming your issues are related to latency?

You haven't told us what LTE router you're using or the rest of the setup (do you have an external antenna etc?)
It's easy to switch to a different provider hoping that its going to fix the issue but this rarely has any effect because you're using the same medium.

Look into something like this.
Use opensignal to get more information so we can attempt to help you.

Hi

My wife mostly social media, some games like Sims 4. Me mostly socials, some emails. Gaming for me is Diablo 3 and recently started on DIable 4. Occasionally for both of us Skyrim.

Router is a TPLink Archer MR600. NO external aerials

Not so much latency as of last 9days and counting line speed went from 20Mbps or higher to lucky if I have a connection at all, or line speeds mostly in the sub 5Mbps range.

He’s just swapping MTN for Vodacom because MTN is congested in his opinion. But yeah, could just be proximity to the tower. Hopefully he buys a sim and does a speed test first. Though he has to bear in mind the fixed LTE uses a different radio to mobile LTE.
Not MTN, Telkom. Was getting 20plus Mbps line speeds till about 9days odd ago, not in the toilet

Do you have any fibre options where you live?

Installed that app, gave me this d/l 3.28Mbps upload 1,12 Mbps Latency of 24ms. What frustrates me is that nothing changed in terms of hardware and suddenly it all tanked. Wifiman app and the TPLink app give similar results

So what then is your question?
Oops, badly worded on my part there. I am looking for general advice and experiences other have had with Vodacom, esp using LTE. Is there a better LTE router than the TPLink archer MR600

AFAIK Axxess's LTE service with Telkom (and vanilla Telkom LTE for that matter) will only work on Telkom-owned towers. To use the Telkom SA-R (roaming on Vodacom) towers you would need a "all network" data bundle active.

Been using Vodacom LTE as primary internet service since 2019-ish. Been great till about September 2024... experienced a little more than usual faults and speed decreases since then. It's more annoyance than frustration currently, so not enough to force me to change... yet.

Might be worth it to get your hands on prepaid sims of all the provider options you're seriously considering. Load some data on them and speedtest at peak and offpeak times. A little bit of a hassle and cost initially, but at least you'll get an idea of what's what in your area. Also, if you get a same (unacceptable) test result across multiple providers, then it might be time to look at the hardware setup...
