General coffee thread

I never drank coffee. I was always the fruit juice "anything fresh" type....
....UNTIL I started working. I cannot live without coffee. Work does not get done without coffee. I am now addicted to the stuff...

i been drinking water for the past 3 years nothing eles but water no coke no juice no coffee no alcohol nothing only water so yeah miss that taste sometimes

Coffee is great. BUT it must be done right. Basic rule, stay away from instant coffee. Go to a shopping centre and get a normal coffee. Add milk (tiny splash, must go karkhi colour)and then two things of sugar. Might taste a bit weird to start, but you'll soon learn how awesome it is :D

What? Not everyone drinks coffee?

I'm a self taught amateur Barista & gots myself a nice little espresso machine. And can say with confidence that my sweet coffee has no comparison to Crapuccinos you find at 95% of SA's so called - Coffee Shops.

If it's too hot, bitter, flavourless and stale, it's your perfect South African coffee. And the really *****ed up thing is, people drink it. Even me when I'm desperate.

ahhhhhhhhh... so good, a nice cup of hot filter coffee with a rusk :D great way to start the morning

My hat's of to you. But why?

I've been drinking water (and only water as a thirst quenching beverage) for 20 years now as well. For me, I don't see the attraction in hot beverages, carbonated drinks and sweet, syrupy crap. Water sorts me out.

My vices are beer, whisky and jagermeister though...:o

Dunking a stale piece of whatever-the-heck-it-is into a delicious cup of java should be cause for anyone to have their coffee privileges revoked and to be forced to drink tea for all eternity . . . but that's just my take on it. :)

like my coffee with milk, prefer filtered to instant. not taking sugar for a while now.

switched to Rooibos yesterday :(

OT: The smilies have been re-arranged:confused:

you mad? Museli rusk is awesome in coffee... then you go wash your cup out and make another cup :D

i got bran rusks. they just not the same as Ouma's buttermilk:sick:

Maybe 2 cups a day with milk. I only drink fresh filter coffee the rest gives me the rattles.
But I drink about 2 litres rooibos tea a day. Black.

About 4 or 5 cups per day. Used to be a lot worse (10ish :o)

Nescafe classic with 2 & a pinch sugars and full cream milk. Low fat milk is water.

Funny thing is I used to work with a pair of total health freaks (vegetarian, no alcohol, no this, no that) - generally very noses-pointed-skyward types. They drank some sort of "elite" Italian brand of coffee by the truckload. Most disgusting, bitter, battery acid sick I've ever had touch my tastebuds. Must've been bottled as industrial cleaner too but I think it was probably a case of "you're doing it wrong" in my colleagues' preparation dept. I'm quite sure their healthy lifestyle was completely wasted by having that poison in their lives. May not have been instant coffee but it sure was instant heartburn. Ugh.

Point is, many of the folks who don't like coffee were probably exposed to some similar variant of nuclear waste on their first attempt.

I have happened to notice there are a select few Cafe's starting to serve coffee at a drinkable standard.

This is not acceptable, before standards are raised any further we must establish a Terrorist Vigilante Group to abolish these god forsaken establishments.

Heaven forbid we lose our eternal bottomless Crapuccino.

Not to be confused with the Starbucks thread :)

1. Feel free to state your consumption
Mine is about 4 cups a day. A few years back, I was on approx 10 a day. I was going through some very bad emotional times and it was my little security blanket. Woe the person who stood between me and my coffee!

2. I was wondering - without feeling the need to Google it - why some people are so affected by the caffeine in coffee and others not?
I have friends who will have their last cup at about 18:00, because otherwise they will be up all night and won't be able to sleep. To this day, I can have a cup, climb in bed immediately afterwards and fall asleep. It does NOTHING to me.

3. Do you drink it black, white and how many sugars?
Me = 1 and 1/2 sugars and milk.

1. I drink about 4 cups a day as well.
2. I used to drink about 8 or 9 a day but was getting terrible headaches till I figured out it was the caffeine. Too much makes me super hyper on some days and very tired on others weird
3. I'm forced to drink black this morning because our office maid forgot to fetch from shop but yah, usually white with 3 sugars.

Whether it's packaged and roasted in Italy, the Moon or Port Elizabeth. it all still comes from the same coffee fields

Vacuum packaging can help retain coffee aroma, but it wont prevent coffee from becoming bitter. Best to check when the batch was roasted on the package. If it's older than a few weeks, or there's not batch production date, dissmiss it. Even better, find a local passionate roaster. Fresher the better.
