Hello,

I hope I have posted this query on the right forum. I am not very technical, so apologies if this seems like a simple question.

My brother and I when we get together back in the UK like to have a Quake III deathmatch. On my brothers home network it is simple to set up a game since both machines have recognisable IP addresses etc.

My question is how can my brother and I play Quake III (for example) when he is sitting in the UK and I am in SA? We both have ADSL, and sit behind wirless routers in our respective homes. We both dynamic IP addresses.

Any help in widening my knowledge base appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Very easy.

Download the free Hamachi P2P VPN software (www.hamachi.cc) to create a virtual network. On one machine create a new Hamachi network, and on the other machine connect to this network.

Hamachi will work with machines behind a router/firewall, and the dynamic IP address is also no problem.

Franna, tried out Hamachi with Quake III, connected first time, thanks.

Next problem is how to reduce lag to allow for a decent deathmatch!?

Try an unshaped accout.

Hi,

Ok, still need some help on this. Tried an unshaped account (PAYG from Web Africa) connecting via Hamachi to my bro in the UK. Still cannot play a decent deathmatch on Quake III, keep getting interruptions.

Now, I know that the internet is an unpredictable beast, and the interruptions could be due to traffic getting held up somewhere.

He is on a 4Mbit line (just got upgraded yesterday by his ISP free of charge from his exisitng 1Mbt line, wish I was back home in the UK!). I am on a 192 awaiting an upgrade to 1Mbit since Wednesday...

Apart from speed issues etc, are there any tweaks, or anything else we can try so we can play a decent deathmatch directly?

Thanks
Doc

you can try a few tweaks here
http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

but sometimes theres not much one can do because latency to europe is quite high so there's bound to be some jerks and freezing. another thing to try is to play during off-peak hours.

Update:

Ok have sorted this out now. The lag was actually caused by both my brother and I using wireless networks at home. Once we connected our laptops directly to the net we could play QuakeIII fine. Still waiting for Telkom to upgrade my line to 1024mbit so it should be even better then.

Thanks for the help.

doc, I doubt that a faster line would help if your ping sucks.

You could have a 1Gig line, if your ping sucks then the game will jolt and not be as smooth...

I applied for an upgrade in the first week of Jan and with a lot of follow ups got it done in April.

Dosn't matter how fast your line is its still going to take a "long" time for data to pass over that distance... for a good game u need less than 100ms latency and i'm sorry but there is no way that can happen between here and the UK... no technology no matter how much u spend. even if its a million bucks. U will still get about 300-500ms latency at the best... am i wrong?

I have noticed that when going from the 192 to 512 (two days only due to telkom mistake, applied for 384) nothing changed on my latency on our local servers.

latency has nothing to do with the speed of your connection
telkom is the reason and dont go get an unshaped account unless you wanna from a 400 latency to 290 latency small different your still gonna get your ass kicked by your brother
