No, still enjoying it :).

The thread just seemed to turn dull so I had to throw in a comment!

Well apparently the plasma 5 Series has the same engine as the Series 7 plasma, which according to another forumite, is better than 6 Series LED-LCD?

Ask them, not me.

But yes, I've read plenty reports of people favouring 5 Series plasma over 6 Series LCD/LED-LCD. I have no need to find links. :)

Samsung TVs use one of 3 processing engines. DNIe+, HyperReal and 3D Hyperreal. As stated on Samsung.com.

The 3D Hyperreal engine is Samsung's best processing engine and is in all Samsung 3D TVs including the PS51D550. The B6000 has the less powerful Hyperreal engine. No brainer. 3D TVs need a much more powerful engine than 2D TVs.

This makes sense because you can mcgyver the D550 firmware to think it is a D7000 and this unlocks the features of the D7000 like Real Black Filter, 10pt Calibration.

With the settings unlocked you have the SAME dark blacks as the D7000. I spent hours reading on AVS Forum and others and I'm not about to spend ages looking for threads to prove a point. But look around and you'll see.

I thought the Real Black Filter was part of the glass/screen? I thought it was an ambient light filter?

Woops I was mixing things up a bit. You're right it's just a fancy name for the AR filter. That, the wifi and smart apps are the only difference between the D550 and D7000 plasma after 'unlocking' the advanced calibration. There's a long thread on this topic on AVS.

Not sure about that either. For instance on the Aus Samsung site they specify the following;

PS51D8000 has Anti Reflection filter and Real Black filter
PS51D6900 has Anti Reflection filter but no Real Black filter

Unfortunately neither of the above are imported by Samsung SA. Pity the D6900 would be a great set, basically a D550 with Anti Reflection for ~30% more, so would be around R13K. LG SA equally as useless, also only bring in the 50PZ550 (equiv to D550) but not the 50PZ750 (equiv to D6900).

Yep, AFAIK, the real black is an extra filter ambient light filter (a polarizing filter of sorts), that doesn't allow ambient light to reduce the contrast of the screen... it is in addition to the normal AR coating.

Dions are having a special on SAMSUNG - 59INCH 3D FULL HIGH DEFINITION PDP TV this weekend for R19995 but they do not mention a model no, is this set any good?

59" PDP, can only be a series 8 if I'm not mistaken. Probably 2009 or 2010 model though. In any case, that's not bad!

If it is 59", it must be a 2011 "D" model - the old ones were 58". AFAIK, the locally available 2011 models in 59" are only the D550... the 64" is a D8000. So as Roman said... 59D550 would be my bet.

My plasma PS50C430 finally kakked after about 9 months use. It started displaying the red dots after exiting the DSTV menus or any bright content so I logged a call with Samsung to repair it.

Landed up with Liptronics who informed me that there were no parts available so I figured I'd have to wait. Not so, Liptronics organised that the set be credited with Game and another be issued. As the set is no longer current stock and prices have come down since I bought it all I have to do was add R750 and I got the PS51D490. I'm a very happy with the outcome as I was quite bleak I purchased the PS50C430 just before the new sets were released.

The image is FAR superior on the new set. It's much crisper and detailed and there is definitely more depth.

Thumbs up to Game and Samsung, you'll get more business from me in the future that is for sure

After hearing this, I wish that my TV dies now. I could get a 59" for less than I got my 50".

Die dammit, die....

Guys, its day 4 of owning the PS51D550 and I am a little concerned about the buzzing. I sit about 2m away from the tv in a 4x4m room and I can hear the high pitched buzz when I switch the tv on (similar to a fluorescent light array in the office). Is this normal or should I return the set? I love this tv but it feels like my ears are tuned into the buzz now so its starting to annoy me.
