I took your advice and kept looking around - waiting for decent specials on a Samsung TV. I found one - I googled it on the Samsung website and it seems pretty decent. But only one problem, the special ends on Thursday :( So I'll just keep looking around - my SO and I have a preference for Samsung screens so a Samsung TV would be ideal for us.

PS51D450 (my recommendation, IIRC) floats around R5,999 - R6,500.

Would highly recommend HD PVR for SO and sport, but perhaps you'd want to wait for those subtitle features.

I gave him your advice - he says he would like to get PVR and says the price for PVR isn't so bad so he's gonna organise it. He knows about the subtitling issue but I don't think we'll have a problem as he does tell me what's happening on TV and I don't usually let it bother me, having grown up in the 80's without subtitles and relying on people to interpret for me now and then.

Another question, would it be possible to copy any PVR recordings to a portable drive or media drive and upload to my PC so that I can download subtitles and watch from my PC? My SO will probably fight with DSTV to get the subtitling software sorted as well as me going forward with a petition to DSTV / Multichoice to put subtitling on all of the channels on DSTV - currently there's only 3 or 4 channels that have subtitles (I know of a lady who does this as a full-time job at DSTV). I know of a couple of deaf friends who currently have DSTV and they constantly complain about the lack of support / response to get subtitles integrated. I remember a mate of mine - he went and picked a argument with some people at DSTV, asking them why they integrated a subtitling button on the remote but doesn't show subtitles. Eventually they put subtitles on M-Net, MM1, MM2 and MovieStar channels. But this is not good enough - they should put on ALL of the channels.

Hmmm you'd need something like a TV/capture card for your computer. AFAIK I think that's the only way to get stuff off the HD PVR. Not sure how that works though. Plenty .srt subtitle files floating around, how ever I wonder if the timing might be out if copying from PVR. Easiest way of course would be downloading.
 
I've bought a Samsung UA40D5003BR (LCD, LED backlight) 2 weeks ago. I also have a Samsung 40A550 (LCD, CCFL backlight). On the UA40D5003BR I have adjusted the backlight, brightness, power saving, basically everything I could to get the backlight less bright, but still it is way too bright. If you sit in front of the panel @ 90° you can see a dim blue-ish tint if no picture is displayed, but if you start moving off 90° the blue-ish tint becomes much brighter and really distracting and irritating. My 40A550 does not do that at all, not even if you look at it from 5°. Do any one of you have a UA40D5003BR and experience the same thing.

Not sure where 90 degrees is, but assuming it's within the general ±178 degree viewing angle of modern branded LCDs, then it sounds like you could have a problem. Where is the blueish tint - across the whole screen?

Pity you got the D5003 as well - this is the diluted 5 Series version with 1 x HDMI, no USB HD media player, etc. I wonder if they skimp on the panel, too.

Perhaps you should have gone with the LA40D550.

90° is right in front of the screen, the angle between the flat panel and the light going to your eyes being 90°. I don't need a media player or more than one HDMI input connector, because I have a MEDE8ER and my processor supports 4 HDMI inputs - so the selection and audio is handled by my processor and the media is handled by the MEDE8ER. I've got a HDMI splitter on the output of the processor driving 3 flat panels. I've never used more than 1 of the 3 HDMI inputs on the 40A550 either. Yep, the blue-ish tint spans across the entire panel.
 
Assuming it's due to panel, you should be able to test one in Game/Makro for similar faults? Unless the bright lighting prevents it.

Definitely return it, or phone Samsung to send a techie. Returning will be less painful.

I've tried to check the one on display in Game, but yes, a lot of bright lighting. I guess they won't swap it, but send it away, what if it gets back and still looks the same? I'm not in the mood for this.

lol, not actually. They didn't have stock and the 32D5000 was on special :p

Yeah after tweaking it is looking good. Takes some time to get used to it, but overall really enjoying it now :)

I went back to Game, adjusted everything to get the backlight to a minimum and then went home, opened all the curtains and looked at mine again. I think they actually look the same. I even looked at the Sony next to the Samsung on display - it looks the same, not that I would ever buy a Sony - soos ek altyd sê: "Ek sony" :)

I think I am only noticing the too bright backlight because my LCD does not look like that. Pity though!:cry:

This part I find interesting.

2D or not 2D, that is the question

So, what to choose? All things being equal, plasma televisions are about two-thirds the price of their LCD equivalents, which are themselves up to a third cheaper than LED sets. Meanwhile, the premium that 3D sets once commanded has all but vanished. They are now worth buying, not so much for their ability to show 3D content, but because they display 2D even better than conventional plasma or LCD sets. 3D sets have special features to reduce “ghosting” in the image and maximise the 3D effect—and this ensures sharper 2D images, too.
