General Plasma & LCD discussions

So I have just set up my ps42c450. And it's a loud buzzer!! So irritated. And I have the volume up at normal listening levels and still the buzzing is distinct. I even transported it correctly standing up.

Going to leave it on for the night and see if the buzzing goes away. But I have tried the Hdmi source adjusted the brightness cell light took off all the silly things like dynamic contrast.

Do I have the worst luck or what??

That settles it, I'm getting a LED

If I had the money I would get an led screen but the picture quality given by plasma for that price and size is unmatched by any LCD in that price range. Just watched Bangkok dangerous on sd dstv and honestly the picture is great.

Yeah, the plasma's def great value for money, but I don't want hassles like buzzing screens... ;)

Don't let PP hear that, he'd throw himself on a sword defending his plasma.

lol so i just got back from Hirsch where they swopped it with the same plasma and we opened that one at the store and the screen was cracked! so got the next plasma out and then got it home set it up and the buzzing is the same if not worse. The buzz is coming from the front of the tv and projecting it to me. GRRRRR

So irritated. I am in the other room and i can still hear it buzzing in the next room.

RW you in JHB? Cause my plasma way back in 2007 buzzed like crazy up here, but after awhile you did not really notice it unless you went close by. People who were sensitive to sound though could really pick it up, my wife particularly, we had to put the poor 32" like way back against the lounge wall so she couldn't hear it. Apparently it happens more at altitude then it does down at the coast, but after I went to the UK and saw my brothers LCD I was like hmmm no buzz, picture quality is actually a little sharper then the plasma, yes the colours were a little brighter but gaming was good on it.

Sheesh randomwalsh, you having some ****e luck dude. Maybe you should just get an LCD and be done with it.

You really shouldn't hear the b buzzing with the TV volume on normal. Thats why I took my first one back as even with volume on normal I could hear it. Drove me nuts.

Dude, I feel for you... Man, that really sucks.

Where's mr postmanpot? Did u have the perfect set first time around?

Yip, can only hear buzzing when I go up very close (literally within 50cm) and that's with volume on 0. And I have a good ear(s).

All plasma's buzz, but it definitely shouldn't be overly audible.

Simple, if it buzzed as much as your first C550, take it back and get it swapped.

You mean a LED edge-lit LCD (99% same tech as LCD, hyped up to add ±10% - 20% to the price)?

Have you heard about LCD back-light bleed?

Have you heard of uneven lighting which results from edge-lit LED LCD's?

These are serious questions. My point though is that there are many factors of both plasma and LCD that could make you not like it on arrival, and make it necessary to return.

Numbers speak volumes, out of the ±30 forumites who've bought Samsung plasma's over the past 5 months I can only recall having heard about 3 having the buzz mentioned and being returned. In fact I can recall the users - Juggy, Grimspoon and randomwalsh.

If you have money to burn that can afford you a better than entry LED-LCD with 100+Hz and all that jazz, then by all means go ahead and buy one.

Meaningless without model numbers and prices.

The buzz should be at the back, and at the top if I'm not mistaken.

There are many forumites who have the C430 version in Jo'burg and have not complained about buzzing, so yours may very well be faulty again.

I would suggest starting a new thread so C430/C450 owners can respond. They are less likely to be active in this thread.

Speak to Hirsch, tell them you want to try breaking the plasma in. Keep it on for a few days to see if the buzz subsides to normal levels which should only be audible closer up with the sound off.

Alright here is what happened.

Went to hirsch and insisted they set my plasma up in their show room and then we can listen and compare the buzz of my plasma to their display model. Mine buzzed alot less there than it did at my house but more than the display model. And I now I had effectively tested all their stock of the ps42c450. So I turned my attention to a LCD screen. Plugged my laptop via Hdmi to the samsung 40c550 LCD which had full hd and played a 1080p rip of tron and I felt like puking the picture was so pixelated.

So by now I had about three extra sales consulates around me and seeing the crap picture the LCD produced so I plugged into my plasma again to see the image. The image it produced (remember only a hd ready tv) destroyed the LCd on every turn.

When I saw this I refused to give up on my plasma. Told the sales person to give me the display model. Also tested the 42 lg plasma itwas crap as well.

So now at the end of the day I agree with previous comment that the plasma gods are mad at me for returning the c550.

So once again I have the ps42c450 set up it's buzzing. The one owner of the ps42c450 said he took out the earth of the plug and his buzzing went away. What do u think?

I do think that the buzzing may be more at my house than at the store because of my power in my home.

First off, thanks for letting me know re the 1-2 weeks order time, appreciate that :)

The thing is that getting the PS42C450 seems to be a bit of a mission. Two options at the moment are via yourself or ordering from Hirsch (shipping from KZN to CPT). Both these options could cause a lot of hassle if the unit I get has a problem (buzz). Admittedly, I haven't had time to go look for the unit at Game, Makro, etc; been doing mostly online searching. So it could be more easily had in CPT.

On the other hand, the LCDs/LEDs seem to be more readily available (I can walk into the shop and buy it) and if there's a problem I can go back to the shop and replace it. So I'm not trying to say LCDs don't have issues, I'm just looking at it from a minimum-potential-hassle angle ;)

I fully realise the plasmas are better value for money and though I can afford to drop R15k, I don't want to make the decision lightly. Hence all the back and forth.

The other thing is that there seems to be very few (active) members on this forum that own mid-range / 100hz LCDs/LEDs and who can give some insights into their purchases and if their happy with it / think it was worth the money...or maybe I should just look harder.

Anyway, the bottom line is that I really don't know at this point what I'm gonna get!! :S Both have different pros and cons, so at the end of the day I'll just have to make the call and dive in.... :)

I know guitar amps buzz if their plugs aren't earthed. Not sure bout the other way round for TVs though...

So I go to makro, game and hifi Corp. Only c430 at 8-9k. Friend bought same tv for same price 6 months ago. No c450. Only Game has c550 at 12k. Too much. Looked at 6 series 58" for 30k, why the big jump in price.
Realized plasma is smooth and great color on any content. Amazed I could follow the ball in the depressing cricket.

But, when I compared plasma and led on hd content, led was sharper, pixelated effect as RW called it. I actually preferred this, while it seems others don't.
So in my opinion LCD can give u the best pic while plasma the better average and cheaper price.
Let's hope I can a good deal on c450 or c550 this week else my impulse instinct is telling me I am going to end up at dion wired next week sat.
