General Plasma & LCD discussions

For people who mainly watch <720p and sport, enough degree to win them over, especially for majority SD content. But then they also have the option of 50" full HD plasma for R9,000. :)

For displaying SD and sport, there is no question plasma is radically better (talking about entry level).

How many of your games/Blu-rays are full HD? ;)

All blu-rays are full HD afaik

Okay, fair enough. :p And the games?

One could argue though that to get the full benefit of 1080p over 720p you'd need a >50" screen, or have to sit within 1.5m from a 40"...

Justifiable to an extent. Still wouldn't win me over if the majority of my content was not Blu-ray.

We just need randomwalsh to comment on how he preferred 1080p TRON on 720p 1024x768 plasma PS42C450) over 1080p LCD (LA40C5x0). :D

Haha I got a mention by name :) hehe

Well like pp said I took the 13gig full hd rip that I had of tron and took my laptop to hirschs connected via hdmi.

The contenders were the ps42c450 and the la40c550.

After the brief showing on both sets. The difference was clear and even the small army of sales person couldn't argue. The plasma was the winner by a football field.

At that price u can't get a better picture than the plasma. Doesn't matter that it's hd ready. Still out performs lower end full hd lcds.

To Add:
I also feel SD over HDMI on LCD look good, comparable to plasma.
I do feel HD looks slighty better on LCD.
So they even.
But, motion on a 50hz LCD is crap. Just bought a 200hz LCD and the difference is enormous. And its just not on sports but movies, games...
Comparing similar price range items, plasma will win.
In terms of viewing distance - it does make a difference.
My wife and i dont notice the size difference when we watch the 40" tv from 6 feet away and 55" from 15 feet away.

That's very interesting to hear, thanks for the feedback!
Is it simply the refresh rate and better colours of the plasma that make things look better on it? (In comparison to a 6-8k LCD)

To be honest. The movie on the LCD wasn't smooth and clean. The picture on the plasma was clear and smooth without any signs of pixels. The colours were better and the refresh rate does help. I would still have a plasma if it wasn't for the buzz that mine produced. Finally settled for a la46c750 (don't let my wifey hear but sd dstv looked better on the plasma. But everything else is top notch on the c750)

Strange - they didn't have any stock yesterday, and said in a week or two...

Just got home with my brand new PS43D490! :D (went for the 490 over the 450 in the end, price:R7k)
The stock came in today, but only the plasmas

Honestly thought the 46" 7 Series LCD would kill the plasma at SD TV. Probably because of the plasma's 1024x768?

*adds ammunition to cache*

:D

Also interested on a report back.

Don't get me wrong concerning sd. It's definitely alot better than the 5 series LCD. But I would say it just just beats the 7 series for sd content but just bits it. Obviously on hd content the 7 series is tops along with 3d.

Getting my htpc tomorrow. With hdmi out and optical audio out and i3 so I can watch 3d without the jumper and I can get proper 5.1 audio from the pc instead of stereo from the tv.

And the games?
Mostly 720p so far.

The difference between 720p & 1080p is very noticable on a 40' @ 2-3m away, its over 2 x the resolution (by pixel count).

Just re-watched Blackhawk Down on Bluray, and the fidelity 1920x1080 is awesome, you can see the individual pores on people's skin on head shots.

Sorry, I dont buy it. I dont care what trickery you believe a Plasma can perform, but there is no way its 1024x768 res is going to provide a better viewing experience of full HD content then a LCD running natively at 1920x1080 res.

That's fine. I ain't trying to sell u a plasma u got your tv. Just sharing my experience.

Also on the full hd vs hd ready. When I watch on my tv there is a clear difference between between rips of 1080p and rips of 720p and I sit about 2.5 meters away.

The beat thing for me is watching anime in either 720p or 1080p. The difference in details is amazing. I am really amazed at people who are animators. I love it.

The experts seem to agree that there is little to no difference from further than the recommended viewing distance per screen size. Even on this forum. 40" FHD viewing distance is recommended at ±1.5m. Your claims come across as being a bit exaggerative IMO, unless we are talking specific media (like working on a PC).

At further than ±1.5m, you'd be surprised. Specifically PS42Cx0 vs LA40C5x0. :o

Well then I think the so called experts need to get their bi-focals checked.

From where I'm sitting, just over 2m away, the difference between MNet HD (Fringe @ 1280x720p) and the Bluray I have loaded in the PS3 (Faster @ 1920x1080p) is definately visible to me.
