Hi All

As I have been out of the loop with regards to downloading tones of conent from the internet, I was wondering what are the new preferred methods?

Do people still use torrents? Or virtual servers located externally or News groups? or has the throttling reduced so that one can download around 50 - 100 gbs without having to become clever?

I ran out of items to download long ago but wanted to stay in the loop with the current procedures.

Well, I use Torrents all the time. They are not fast anyway, so the line speed has little to do with it. Sometimes it can take days to download a file, so I just leave it running. This month I have used 86Gb and not had any problems.

Newgroups can be a bit limited and I also found them unreliable (broken links, missing files, etc)

On a 1mb line you should be able to get your 100Gbs easily on torrents if you are with a better than average uncapped product. Not those R100 browse uncapped packages. Openweb gold is what I use, and with mweb you will also be able to download that amount. Now News servers is a premium you pay extra for and therefor get faster speeds. I have a 2mb line and do about 250 - 300 gigs on torrents alone per month. That should give you an idea of what to aim for. Hope it helps.

thanks, so the virtual servers such as downstorm etc have fallen out of favour?

Torrents are just way too much effort.

I use SickBeard and SABnzbd+ to automate all my downloads. News server downloads are also faster and you won't get infringement notices either, because you're not sharing anything.

I agree, I think you get what you pay for. I also prefer news its a bit complicated at first but when you get the hang of it its really awesome. I currently use atraweb uncapped, nzbmatrix vip, nzbsu vip and blocknews as a backup on a 1 meg mweb data uncapped and 2 meg telkom line. I havent had a failed download in ages and speeds are excellent even during office hours. See my stats for the 17th of this month. Also using Sab+SickB+CouchP for downloads and automation. :)

You cannot access any local servers (they don't have their own) but any international news server works fine on Cybersmart.
