Generator advice

I have this model, running on it right now. Works as advertised, is really silent and the energy saving mode is really useful.

Awesome thanks man. What is the fuel usage like and what kind of load do you put on it?

Probably not much in it but just wondering what the main differences are between the Mac Afric and Gentech brands?

I dont have either, but the Mac-Africa is enclosed and the Gentech open framed?

I have a normal Mac-Africa 6.5 Kva (5kWh) Generator, and I have no issues with it.

I had a few minutes, copied from both websites and aligned as best as possible. Note the pdf for generators can be found on Adendorff websites.

Just saw this:
The MAC AFRIC 3.2kW is our larger inverter generator and offers a host of new features compared to traditional generators. Inverter generators produce pure sine wave electricity meaning that sensitive devices with microprocessors (such as TVs, recording equipment, and medical equipment) can safely run at optimal levels. This generator boasts reduced noise levels at 65 Dba which is quieter than most vacuums! The connectivity on offer is outstanding – with a digital display, 2 full-sized plugs, 2 USB ports, an integrated pull handle, and soft plastic wheels for easier maneuverability.

Thanks for this. On paper, bar the fuel tank size, the Mac Afric looks to be the better unit?

incoming flak ....no portable gene is designed to be anything else but portable.but if you go the hookup route go with a decent mains isolator ,try not to run suicide cables ,your socket outlets are rated for 16 amp a gene on a suicide cable can flatten that easily .do it properly if you can .also go buy a fire extinguisher and keep it by the area of the gene .

100%. Will get an electrician to do a proper setup. Just wanted to find out if I can hook it up.

This machine is ultimately just to power a few lights, our TV and the PC. Not going to be used for anything else. Just need something that can give me reliable power for 3-4 hours stretches but budget doesn't allow for Lithuim based solutions atm.

The cost of petrol refills vs. once-off lithium?

Yeah considered that. I can't choose unfortunately. My company is buying this and I wasn't able to convince them to spend the extra 10K for a lithium based solution.

So, in the end. Not paying for it, but will be paying for the petrol used.

65dBA is not quiet! - not by a long shot.

I have a Omega 2kW and it's rated at 62dBA - it's far from quiet. (Or manufacturer lies about actual dB level ;)
I'm actually researching methods to quieten it down.

Anyone have clues on this?

Ryobi lasts about an hour.
2 lawnmowers blown.
2 generators blown.
No backup no replacement no spares.

A lot depends on the pc specs

So lets say you need. 720w inverter at least

if it is just for browsing and office work you would most likely land in a situation that one 100ah lithium can power it for the 3-4 hrs
So lets say cheapest option is 10k

Edit i was high or something
So with R100 petrol a day
For 3-4 hrs the electricity to top up the battery would be 5% the running cost of the genny

So you pay a R95 premium per 4hrs

So lets say 105days of that daily 4hrs you spent the cost of the battery and cheapie inverter

Run the genny more ie 8 hrs it is less than 2mnths

If the pc is for gaming you have to add another battery and the math changes a bit

ie the premium gets less

lets say you run a 5kw inverter @ 70% capacity ie 3.5kw

then the premium becomes R58

you would need a 5kw inverter and 15kw batteries ie would probably spemd 100k

that would mean 1724 days so 4.7 yrs, to spemd that amount of premium on petrol

ie break even point (but keep in mind the petrol usage would go up if torturing the generator, so using the same petrol consumption would be a bit inacurate )

the more you use the easier it is to justify going genny instead of inverter
ie budget can't stretch that far for install

smaller loads just go inverter

Stick to Honda or Yamaha.
Honda makes allmost all of Ryobi petrol motors .Stevens and company has some of the best backup in SA .if you have so many issues why dont you contact them im sure they will assist if not abused.i should be able to put you in contact with the regional manager .

you have to use a lot of power and low budget for layout, to justify going petrol

so dependant on requirements

looking at for home low loads a few months of petrol = lithium+ inverter
real power user torturing the generator few years to cover the cost

and naturally if loadshedding gets suspended just after you buy the battery + lithium
your math goes to ****

when i got my first setup a few years ago this happened

ok got more cells battery hooked up next day suspended
