Hi.

Does anyone know of someone that builds generator boxes? - I heard a guy call in to the radio over the weekend that does exactly this as a service but I wasn't quick enough to get his email address. It was something like genny boxes at gmail dot com but I'm not sure on the spelling etc. and I can only imagine the sorts of response I'd get emailing people with gmail accounts that has the word's G/Jenny and Boxes in the address. :D

Anyhooo.... I have a generator but its so freaking loud that I've only ever used it the once as I'm worried the estate police come a knocking at my door. I also can't stand the fumes the thing makes. Gives me a headache of note.

So I'm looking for someone that specialises in building these things as a service. I need to muffle the noise and pipe the exhaust fumes up to roof level.

Thanks in advance.

I chatted to Johan from: http://www.jhgeneratorsilencers.com/
He seems to have a very nice product and was very helpful on the phone.

He also sent me this link to an install that they did: http://www.davidbatzofin.com/2015/05/silence-is-golden.html

I'm definitely going to get one of his silencers but I'm not sure about the box. Its made of treated wood that is then painted in flash harry to give it water resistance and he does supply a waterproof canvas cover with his box.

But wouldn't something like this be even better: http://www.junkmail.co.za/business/...neering-portable-generator-enclosure-36813349 ?

Is is the wooden box really the best option for buffering the noise?

Has anyone here purchased any of these 2 boxes?

R.

At first the metal one seems better, but on reflection the wooden one is probably quieter, external muffler aside.

Both will dampen direct airborne noise from the genny, but what about secondary noise from vibration? Unless the genny is mounted on rubber vibration dampers, it seems to me the large metal panels could act as a speaker diaphragm, transmitting secondary vibration-induced noise.

I'd want to test both to see what really happens.

Well as per his website:
The JH generator silencer gives you peace and quiet from all generator noise. They are built from 2mm steal to guarantee quality and are also heat resistant 1500°C thanks to the special fibre filled chamber. These models are portable, but can also be wall-mounted while the flexi-hose exhaust outlet that can be lengthened up to 1m.

R 1 249 - (1kVA - 5kVA)
R 1 499 - ( 6kVA - 10kVA)
R 1 749 - (11kVA - 15kVA)

5 Year Warranty included
10 year warranty - Added R 750

I chatted to him on the phone about what the silencer actually does and he says that this is part of his setup that will take the "Travelling" noise away. So your neighbours won't be disturbed. - Also for my part I need an exhaust anyway as the fumes drive me insane. - Our estate also reckons that we need to carry the exhaust fumes up to roof height so I plan to put a standard "dummy gutter" up to roof height and just lead the end of the silencer into that.

This is what David says on his blog about the silencer:
But this is the "heart" of the installation.
And external silencer that reduces exhaust noise to almost zero.
In fact the only sound is not the "put-put" of a 50cc moped,
but rather a whisper of escaping gases.
Truly amazing

Rgds,

I read somewhere on these forums about putting the genny or box on tyres. - Sounds like a good way to muffle the vibration to me.

getting to cape town will cost a bit probably. need one though. worried about the rain. at the moment just carry it out when I need it. but you have to keep watching the weather while in use.

Hmmmm. The junk mail guy is not quick to answer enquiries so I think I'll probably just go with Johan's setup.

LOL.

Still like the look of those junkmail genny boxes though. They just look so..... solid an weatherproof.

Ok I've ordered the silencer and box. I'll find out soon how effective they are. I'll take before and after db readings from 1m and 5m away with a db meter app. (Not accurate I know)
