Hi all, needing a tiny quiet gennie to power only the tv and decoder plugs in our cottage. Cooking and lighting all ok on gas but I miss the sport..
Any suggestions of makes and prices ?

Get a baby 1KW. Quiet. Search for best price. Should be R3-4K.

I know you're looking for a genie... but why not consider a 600W inverter + deep cycle battery(s) ??... its cleaner (no petrol/diesel)... quieter (better viewing experience) and lower maintenance.

Be very careful... you need to get a regulator if you going to use it for electronic devices, especially for TV's, else it may go up in smoke...

I have an 800 w inverter from camping days..used in kombi to run 220 fridge when travelling. And various gewone battery charges. What else is needed?

The one @Arthur posted is an 12v generator with a built in 220v inverter = 100% pure sine wave.

I would rather opt for a 600w UPS (24VDC) system and a 24v100ah battery.

This will cost you around R2-3k and you will get no less than 3 hours backup time.

One day we shall accept that when there is a power cut its time to sleep /go out/ talk :D

We watched the rugby last weekend during the loadshedding off a deep cycle battery with a 500watt inverter. Also had 120watt solar panels charging the battery while we watched. Total power time was just over 3 hours.

...and as power went out in Krugersdorp now, my bestcustomer needs an urgent quote....

In the case of business at least there is money being generated and therefore it's sustainable to run backup power till till

Please share your setup on how you power your lights with gas.

Solar and batteries + invertor is your best choice

Just a battery.

A car invert would run on 12vdc (not 24vdc), so that means you'll only need one battery. But as it depends on the cars alternator to charge the battery, and does not have a build in MPPT charger. You'll also need one of your 'gewone' :) chargers.. make sure to use one that supports trickle charge (to keep the battery topped up, deep cycle batteries are best stored at +90% charge).

For the battery, try http: // zulteck.co.za /... I bought my Royal 102AH for just under R1000 from them (Good batteries). Of course you might be able to get away with a smaller (/cheaper) battery based on your equipment's load. PS when doing choosing your battery make sure you get a battery with double your load requirements... deep cycles also do not like to being drained beyond 50%...

i.e. if your equipment uses 400W/h (tv+dish+amp+dvd player) and you need to run it for 4 hours (total 1600W)... as roughly a 102AH @12vdc battery gives a thumb-suck 1200W you'd would need 3 of them in series...

There all sort of fancy thing you could do with simple 12V automotive relays to do automagic switching between putting current into the batteries via your charger when the power is on and to the invert when the power is off...

i.e.
Battery + = common
Charge + = NO
Invert + = NC
Use the chargers 12V to close the relay when you have power... disconnecting the invert and starting the recharge of the battery.

PM me and I'll draw you a diagram.

Or even... Buying a cheap 20A solar MPPT charger (R200) with a 85W panel (R850)... and permanently run your TV off-grid... etc, etc, etc

I'm hoping to run my house lights off gas or solar, if I can. I am not too clued up on this.

Gas? Simply add a "MIWI MDR-20-12 20W 12V 1.67A din-rail Power Supply, 220vac to 12vdc switch power supply" to your DB, move you light wires to it... replace your B22 / E27 lights/downlights with 12VDC versions. Then use a 12VDC NC/NO relay to hook up a battery backup via the NC on the relay... (no need to rewire your lights or switches).

Thanks all so far. Popped into OW Strubens for some info. Could of got more help from Checkers fish counter...
