Generator LPG conversions

Okay, no problem. My generator is 4 years old and due for a replacement anyway and I will still test the Gas system. I was charged R1900 which included the kit and the installation, so a lot cheaper than yours. If it kills the Generator, then I will know. If not, I will install a new system on my new Generator as well. And, if it does kill the generator, I will open the gas in the concrete room we built for the generator and then blow the gas bottle to see if it can destroy the small room I built.
Guess you can try controlled demolition but why not make it interesting... See if you can put your generator in orbit

So far so good - 6 days, 9 loadshedding sessions and 18:51 hours on a gas generator later. Don't know how much gas I have left in my 19KG bottle, but I intend to let it run empty and see how far I can go.

you should get around 25 hours ,load depending .pour some hot water down the side of the cylinder it will be cold at the gas level .

Okay, so I ran out of my 19KG gas bottle this morning. Got a total of 24:55 hours on gas. Over this period I would have used 2 tanks petrol as well. At around R580 per tank petrol, I would have paid around R1,160. My 19KG gas bottle cost me R570, which include the cost of a company that has delivered it, will come out to exchange it and fix the connection again. So, the gas is saving me around 50% of my petrol costs.

@rvZA Hows the gene running so far on gas? I have the same generator and also thinking about this conversion.

I am sorry I have not updated the post. I ran on gas for probably around 5 or so months without issue. One morning I started up the Generator but when the switchover was done, I could not use any appliance like a kettle. If I switched that on, the Generator just died. Does not matter what I do, I cannot seem to get the Generator to work on Gas again.

I still had petrol in the generator and took off the gas connection. When starting up on petrol, the Generator seemed to work again.

I have since been running on petrol and still have my full Gas bottles standing around.

Thank you, so then it looks like its not a good idea to make the change then.

Half price running costs seems like a no-brainer to me. I would fix the problem instead of regressing back to petrol. Clearly there is nothing wrong with the genny.

@6174 warned me earlier in this thread there was a risk. I did experience an increase in backfiring when starting up the generator just before it was no longer capable of running any appliances. But, like I mentioned, I switched back to petrol and it ran without problems.

So, the Generator may still work fine on petrol, but I am not willing to take the risk on the Gas any further. That is just my opinion and how I feel about it. I also do not want to end up one day on page 7 of the Beeld newspaper for being blown up along with my Generator.

Generators are noisy and annoying, yes have one for exceptional circumstances but please mense, get a solar/battery backup like a civilized person for every day use.

Yes it's noisy and annoying, but when CP doesn't fix your power for 12 days and counting, you'll be glad to have one

People use a genny when its cloudy instead of buying batteries that last 3 days.

Problem with 3 day batteries, you'd need a lot of panels to charge those back up or a generator

Not really, you generate more than you use on clear days so you can build the buffer back up. The problem is the price for 100kWh of batteries. A generator running for 2 hours is cheaper.

It's okay, we will be bothering you quiet loving people for some time to come with noisy and annoying generators. So, to have peace, please support your Eskom to fix the Grid.

Fortunately I don't live in Krugersdorp, my neighbour tried it once but it soon got to her, so I am safe for now.

You can be lucky we are not neighbours. I will have tied you up in so many legal battles and protection orders, I would have bankrupted you and ensure you move out.
