Generator running at 280v

Hi guys

I just had my Ryobi Rg-6700K generator serviced, but now when I start the genny, the voltage meter is reading between 280v and 300v before I plug in anything. What can I do to correct this?

Is it revving a lot higher than normal?
 
Its adjustable so the service center either did it incorrectly or set it under load in which case the voltage will drop when you plug it in.

280-300v sounds very high though.
 
1st take it into the guys who serviced it, else if they don't fix it I'd try reducing the accelerators unit, it's like a little servo that moves an arm on the carb, it'll increase power when there is more demand and reduce it when there is less
 
Thanks for the info. Does'nt sound like it's revving higher than normal. I will send it back for repairs...
 
Connect a frequency meter, should read about 50Hz if the speed is set correctly. If its to high look between the tank and engine close to the fuel tap facing the recoil start for a screw that has a spring around it, adjust this crew to increase or decrease the speed.

If the speed is okay but volts to high open the back of the alternator and look for the half moon AVR, loosen the two screws that hold the AVR in place, on the bottom side you will find one of those multy turn pot, turn anti clock to decrease voltage. Adjust little at a time, dont do this while the motor is running or you might get a shock.
 
Thanks Dillinger, will follow your steps and see if it solves the problem. I don't really want to lug the heavy genny back to the service place if I can solve the problem with your advice.
 
These basic generators usually require a substantial load to settle at 230/240v AC.

A 1000W electric heater is what we used to plug in for field events in years gone bye... A pain in the rear end during summer!!

Slowing the engine will drop the off-load output but once you have a few hundred watts pulling from it, you may find your output hovering below 200v AC.
 
Most of the cheaper generators have a resonant transformer to saturate the magnetic core and rotating rectifier. You will find a capacitor of about 12uF which may be disconnected or faulty. You can check for approx. 600Vac across the capacitor terminals while the gen is running with no load.
AVR eletronic types of regulator usually work without a problem (if the battery is fully charged).
