Has anyone had the problem of constantly receiving "Generic Host Error" message when using the Huawei E220 usb Modem?
I have tried everything I know and followed advice from different people, but to no avail.
I have made sure I have the xp updates and hotfixes from Microsoft and still that stupid message.
I have scanned for trojans, viruses, malware, spyware and still nothing.
I have contacted Huawei and they just keep asking for a mini dump which I sent and they still have not come back to me. This was three months ago.
Sheeesh.... what is a man to do?
Can anyone help????

Regards
Iggy

Is there a program on your system called

"Defender 5" ?

I do not use the Huawei E220, and i get the same message sometimes when connecting with my MTN Prepaid sim in my GPRS phone. Then it won't open webpages and it won't disconnect from the internet. Restart my PC and it's OK again, connect and browse without a problem.
It is strange. BTW it never happens with my VM sim.
Maybe VM is to slow to disconnect.:D

hi Pitbull. Nope, no defender 5 on my machine. I am so confused with this issue.
But the problem seems to be connected with other pluggable items as well. i have spent hours surfing the net and a lot of people have this problem but with other devices.

I also had this problem on mtn a while ago, tried for 6 weeks to get it fixed, and then i just decided that its not worth ity and i switched to Voda, and POOF, gone was the proble3m

MTN is obviously doing some "WEIRD CRAP" with their network again.... They go and do strange things from time to time - then you experience everything from DNS errors, to Disconnections.... etc etc

While this all is going on - basically ALL of their users start searching their hardware for solutions.... Thanks MTN.... wasting everyone's time like that!

I haven't come across this error before, please provide some details of where you see the error (is it a Windows pop-up, a Blue Screen of Death, an error from the F@stlink software, etc), and what was happening just prior to the error appearing (plugging in the modem, connecting to the internet, etc).

I experienced the "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Error" but I didn't hav a GPRS or 3g modem connected, it was totally random, after installing two hotfixes from Microsoft the problem vanished. I'm not sure if it's the same two listed above but I'll check and let you know.

I get the same error on my E620 card, its very frustrating because I can be in the middle of something and then I have to restart my computer to get it working again, I too do not have this problem with a VC sim card. Is there any way of attaching a file, then I can attach the error message i receive.

I think it's only the forum admins that are able to attach files here. You could make use of a free image hosting service, like photobucket, and then link to the image in your post.

I have not been able to connect to the net for a couple of days due to the same message popping up all the time so I have done the next best thing.
I went to Vodacom and poured out my soul to them and they acknowledged that they too had a similar problem with the Huawei Modem and the Generic Host Error message BUT they had a new software that prevented this.
All I had to do was run the firmware upgrade and software that they would give me, insert a Vodacom SIM and my problems would be over. This I have done and here I am. Ok almost because I have had the message pop up twice tonight at random times. I have to reboot each and evry time. What a waste of time.
I am going to check to see if I have all the hotfixes etc. in place and just keep on trying.
Oh .... and before you ask, yes this is all running on a clean installation of XP SP2. And ...yes I have run antivirus, malware detection, etc. etc. etc.
This thing is driving me crazy.

I think that there may be a problem with a number of sim cards, it makes sense seeing as I dont get the problem using a Vodacom Sim with either the MTN software or Vodacom software and also I have these problems using MTN sim on both VC and MTN software, I am going to do a sim swap and will advise if this sorts out the problem. Also I went to MTNSP last week to see if they could sort out this problem, i spoke to a chap by the name of Hugo who was very helpfull o the face of it and said that if I called him at 5 p.m then he would help me telephonically with the settings on my software as this might be the problem. I called hima at 5 and after going through various settings i still got the same problem, he said he had never encountered this before but he will make enquiries and get back to me - well it has been about 8 days and i have not heard from Hugo again and suspect I will never hear from him again, i did leave a message for him but no luck - this means I have to resolve this problem on my own because by the looks of it I will not get the help from MTN.

I have come across this "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Error" before. It happened to me when I ran a symantec update. Nortons 2004 picked it up as the Win32 Jeefo Virus and cleaned it. Basically the virus hides in the c:\windows\svchost.exe and infects other exe's - This could be the same thing.

But then why would it happen on only MTN sim cards?

OK... just to bring you all up to speed. I cannot even remember how many things I have tried since my last posting but I have some good news. The generic host error kept on and on and eventually I took alook at the CD the guy from Vodacom had given me and there was another program on there for the E620 card. What did I have to loose?
I cleared my machine of the installation which the modem loads on the first connect and then installed the E620 software. I think it's called Mobile Connect.
When the installation was done all I did was click on the Desktop icon that was there and bingo!!!!!
This thing connected immediatly.
Scared to death that something would go wrong I opened my browser and surfed for about an hour. NOTHING WENT WRONG!!!!
OK... so now I disconnected and powered down, rebooted and a message popped up asking whether I would like to install the firmware version resident on the modem and I declined.I then clicked the Icon for the e620 software and the dashboard popped up, I clicked connect and it was immediate.
It has been 3 days now and about 20 attempts and it works everytime.
I don't want to tempt the devil but it sure works up to now.
