Hi there.

I'm considering purchasing a Generic UEC SD PVR, if such a thing exists.
By generic I mean just UEC branding, and the freedom to use it anywhere, and not Multichoice firmware, that's locked down to the max.

Reason asking, as I'm located in NZ, and when I was back in SA recently, the dual view decoder really impressed me, being able to watch 2 channels, with the same STB, on two different TVs, in the house, something Sky here, refuses to roll out, or even consider.

I currently have an ex Multichoice DSD-660 in the bedroom, set up, and working in the bedroom. I obtained it secondhand here, and upon opening the information menu I saw that hadn't been firmware updated in 15 years, and although you can see compared to the later firmware, that it is rather old, it however works fine with the FTA here, and on Sky NZ transponders, I get an "Insert Smart Card" message. I have a feeling it will work with an older version of a Sky smart card, something I need to get round to trying when I get my hands on one. However i'll pack it in storage for a Generic SD-PVR any day.

You just love to make up your own little scenarios, without any research :erm: :D

Unless Sky uses Irdeto (they do not), a Sky smard card will not work... and no, there is not a commercially available "generic version" of a UEC decoder that was discontinued in 2008.

Hehehe...

I'm not entirely sure what exactly are you trying to achieve. If its FTA you're after, then there's plenty better stb's to use than a 2nd hand multichoice dsd. If you looking for dstv, forget it. If you a trying to get Sky, forget it,sky uses NDS and dstv irdeto.

I think you need to make peace with the fact that you living in NZ, place you literally in a satellite dead zone. You don't have many choices there, even Africa have better coverage. I assume you are still trying to get SA Tv there (god knows why) but afaik your choices at the moment are ANN7 live on their website, SABC News via youtube or slingbox. You should research online options because satellite just won't work for your area.

Enca is available FTA on 28.2E but again, you can't get it.
