New Genesis GV70 SUV revealed as Audi Q5 rival

New GV70 will be a key model in new premium brand's European launch that's expected next year

The ramp-up towards Genesis’s European launch continues with the reveal of its latest model, the GV70 SUV.

The new Genesis GV70, Genesis’s fifth model after the G70, G80 and G90 saloons, and the larger GV80 SUV, is intended to compete head on with the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC in the booming mid-size premium SUV segment.

As such, it is set to be one of the key models in Genesis’s European launch, which was originally intended for this year but will likely now happen next after Genesis only recently started assembling a senior executive team headed by former Audi sales boss Dominique Boeschto to oversee the launch. It will include right-hand drive cars for the UK.

Genesis, the premium arm of Hyundai launched as a standalone brand in 2015 in the likes of the US and its native Korea, is basing all of its models on a rear-drive architecture with optional all-wheel drive, and the new GV70 is no exception.

Other technical details for the new model have yet to be confirmed, however, for the GV70, although engines are likely to mirror the recently-revised G70 and include a 249bhp, 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 199bhp, 2.2-litre diesel.

Official pictures of the new GV70 reveal an exterior design familiar from that of the larger GV80, and an interior that borrows plenty from the G70. Two versions will be offered and have been pictured at the car’s reveal - a standard version and a Sport model.

Genesis GV70

Genesis officially revealed the exterior and interior of the athletic and sporty GV70 SUV. The much-anticipated Genesis GV70 becomes the fifth model in the Genesis lineup, joining the G70, G80, and G90 sedans, along with recently announced GV80 flagship SUV. Like all other Genesis models, the GV70 will be based on a rear-wheel-drive platform.

"Genesis continues to build on our solid foundation with the addition of new and exciting products to our lineup," said Mark Del Rosso, President and Chief Executive Officer of Genesis Motor North America. "We recently launched our first-ever SUV, the flagship GV80, with U.S. deliveries beginning in the next thirty days. Now, with the upcoming release of the dynamic GV70 and a further diversified product portfolio, Genesis will be able to reach an even broader audience of American consumers."

The "G" in GV70 represents Genesis, while the "V" refers to the versatility that only a Genesis SUV can offer.

Inspired by the design philosophy of "Athletic Elegance", the GV70 features a sporty and powerful appearance.

The design of the Genesis GV70's front is thoroughly unique. The iconic Crest Grille, which takes its shape from the Genesis logo, has been set lower than the Quad Lamps to reflect the SUV's athletic nature, while the two lines of the Quad Lamps evoke a sense of speed and dynamism. Skid plates placed on the bottom of the bumpers reinforce the SUV's powerful image.

When viewed from the side, the Genesis GV70 exudes an elegant sensibility. The arching Parabolic Line, which begins at the top of the Quad Lamps and runs elegantly along the side of the SUV, creates a dramatic contrast with the muscular rear fenders. The sleek and elegant coupe-like roofline, along with the dropping chrome line to the C-pillar, accentuate the GV70's unique athletic characteristic.

At the rear, the taillights feature the ultra-thin signature two lines of the Quad Lamps, while all functional elements are set in the bumper, helping to achieve exceptionally clean, pure forms. The rear also features a number of subtle design details - including a G-Matrix pattern-applied bumper, a unique vertical shaped muffler, and a body-colored diffuser - that accentuate the GV70's dynamic look.

Genesis GV70 is Hyundai’s striking new answer to the BMW X3

After relying on sedans to fight its premium car game for perhaps a bit too long, Hyundai’s premium division Genesis has pulled the wraps off its second SUV model, the GV70. This follows the larger GV80 that was revealed earlier this year.

As its name implies the GV70 is based around the G70 sedan, which is a rival to the BMW 3 Series. And while that should theoretically make the GV70 a direct rival to the X3, the new Genesis seems to have a more low-slung and car-like countenance about it, like it’s more of a pumped up estate car than a boxy SUV. And given the striking and distinctive lines that we see on this car, that’s certainly not a bad thing in our book.

Like its Genesis counterparts, the GV70 will be built around a rear-wheel drive platform, but all-wheel drive versions will also be available. Genesis says there will also be a Sport model, which comes with 21-inch G-Matrix pattern-applied wheels, as well as dark chrome garnishes and a large-diameter exhaust.

Genesis GV70 SUV receives UK debut at Goodwood

Top-rung version of Audi Q5 rival will complete the 0-62mph sprint as fast as a Porsche Macan S

Hyundai's luxury brand Genesis has publically debuted its new GV70 SUV at Goodwood alongside the G70 Shooting Brake, which also made its first UK appearance. Both cars wills act as key models in the brand's imminent European launch.

The brand’s fifth model after the G70, G80 and G90 saloons, and the larger GV80 SUV, is intended to compete head on with the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC in the booming mid-size premium SUV segment.

Genesis will begin their European launch soon, having assembled a senior executive team headed by former Audi sales boss Dominique Boeschto. The premium arm of Hyundai, it launched as a standalone brand in 2015 in the likes of the US and its native Korea, basing all of its models on a rear-drive architecture with optional all-wheel drive, and the new GV70 is no exception.

Engine options mirror the recently-revised G70 and include a 300bhp 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder, a 375bhp 3.5-litre turbocharged V6 and a 199bhp, 2.2-litre diesel. The two lower-capacity units will be offered in rear- and four-wheel-drive formats, while the 3.5-litre range-topper will be four-wheel-drive only.

New Genesis GV70 to take on Audi Q5 from £39,450

All-wheel-drive premium crossover follows G80 and GV80 flagships into European dealerships

Arriving alongside the G70 saloon and after the G80 and the larger GV80 SUV, the new Genesis GV70 is intended to compete head on with the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC in the booming mid-size premium SUV segment.

Ahead of the SUV's arrival in dealerships next month, Genesis has confirmed it will be priced from £39,450. Engine options mirror the recently revised G70 and include a 300bhp 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder and a 199bhp, 2.2-litre diesel, both of which offered exclusively with four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox with a "Multi Terrain Control' system, which brings bespoke driving modes for snowy, sandy and muddy conditions.

Each powertrain can be paired with a Sport Package upgrade, which brings an electronic limited-slip differential for improved handling, alongside exclusive sports wheel designs, larger exhaust outlet, colour-coded rear diffuser and carbonfibre-style interior trim elements.

The SUV's exterior design is familiar from that of the larger GV80, with a front end dominated by the brand's trademark 'Crest' grille, horizontal headlights and prominent winged emblem. Like its SUV sibling, the GV70 sports a coupé-style sloping roofline, horizontal brake light clusters and a sizeable rear spoiler.

The interior, meanwhile, borrows heavily from the G70 saloon. Said to be "driver-oriented" and inspired by Korean architecture, it is dominated by an ellipitical control panel that extends across the dashboard, and a large LCD infotainment touchscreen.

Join the Q: New Genesis GV70 faces Audi Q5

Genesis has been snapping at premium players’ heels and is now trying to conquer Europe. Is the GV70 SUV the car to do it?

It has been a long time coming. Genesis as a brand, I mean. We know why it exists: premium means profit. Manufacturers of ordinary cars look at the space that Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz occupy with envious eyes. And it was as long ago as 2004 that Hyundai first developed posh car aspirations of its own.

It took until 2008 for it to happen, with a car badged Hyundai Genesis, the second generation of which came to the UK from 2015, in right-hand drive and small numbers. Small, because while sales of the original Hyundai model in the US were good enough to prompt the establishment of the name as a brand in its own right, we’re a bit sniffy about that sort of thing in Europe.

Lexus was launched 31 years ago with a car – the LS400 – that did things unlike any other luxury saloon. And yet three decades later, its sales in the UK of posh Toyotas hover between 10,000 and 15,000 cars a year. Mercedes sells nearly five times that many A-Classes alone, because it’s easier to go downmarket than up. Ford’s Vignale models will show that. Likewise DS. Infiniti gave up entirely.

But, well, look: the Genesis brand is going to do well in the US, in China and likely elsewhere. Genesis and Hyundai have design, engineering and development centres in South Korea, the US and Europe, so it’s a global range. Even if it doesn’t do huge numbers in Europe, we’ll contribute a bit.

This, then, is a GV70. G for Genesis, V for Versatile, billed in some markets as a ‘premium urban SUV’, but it’s quite a big car here. It’s 4.7 metres long, which puts it at the same length as a BMW 3 Series, while prices start from £40,000. This one, a Luxury Line, starts at £42,820, but this test car sits at £50,620 including options. And although there are electrified Genesis models around or coming, this one, curiously, is launched as a petrol or diesel only. This one’s a diesel.
