I do not know if they now have logging with portage, something that was a huge oversight in the past, but if they still do not have logs for portage it would be wise to take the extra few minutes to log each install and upgrade on your system. Should a lib or package break then it would be easy as pie to trace the problem and rectify it by downgrading or replacing the culprit.
I wish I kept all my bookmarks of forum links since the day I started using Gentoo, there were some absolute gems in there, but alas, they are now gone.
