Gentoo is probably my all-time favourite Linux distribution. It was one of the first I ever installed and used for any decent period of time.

Anyhow, I have just rekindled my love for it by installing it as my new firewall/proxy/router box. Thus, I thought I would share some basic info on it:

First off, Gentoo on DistroWatch

Also, the local mirrors:

You can download it here (if you don't know which architecture you are, you're probably x86)

And you can set your local rsync and portage mirrors in your make.conf to:

Code:
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.mirror.ac.za/"
SYNC="rsync://rsync.rucus.ru.ac.za/gentoo-portage/"

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Gentoo is awesome. Use it.

I was thinking about getting Gentoo as a toy whilst using Kubuntu.What is so nice about Gentoo, or maybe what differences are there between Gentoo and Kubuntu?

For example its portable and has a good package management system. It could do with some work on --unmerge and further simplifying its init system, but other than that its some of the best of BSD in linux.

EDIT: oh and its so much nicer after migrating to OpenRC

Gentoo uses a similar package management system to Debian-based distros (i.e. apt-get), in that it references online package repositories from which it downloads its packages.

For more info, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portage_(software)

I find that I like Gentoo simply because it is so flexible and allows for one to really get down and dirty in the inner-workings of one's Linux install.
