Geomagnetic storm worst since 2003

A severe solar storm this weekend brought a dazzling display of the Northern Lights that could be seen across Europe and as far south as Alabama in the US, while threatening to trigger blackouts and disrupt navigation systems around the world.

An extreme geomagnetic storm is underway as energy from the sun collided with Earth’s magnetic field, the US Space Weather Prediction Centre said.

I may have been lucky and caught a glimpse of the aurora last night from the deep south in CPT, looking towards Simon's Town/Cape Point.

I looked out my window just before going to bed and thought, "oh no, it looks like there is a fire on the mountain again", but realized that the glow in the sky was much more crimson than orange and that there wasn't any smoke. It was a really clear night.

Most likely. Quite a few people from Hermanus have posted photos on the local Facebook groups.

Oh yeah, after taking a look at some of the pics it was definitely an aurora, it was just a bit dim, and most of my view of the horizon is blocked by a mountain, unfortunately. A DSLR with long exposure would have gotten a pic...
