Germany is to introduce temporary controls on its border with Austria to cope with the influx of migrants, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere has said.

Earlier on Sunday, Germany's Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, who is also economy minister, warned the country was being stretched to its limits by the new arrivals.
Last week, Mr Gabriel said Germany could take in 500,000 asylum seekers a year for several years.
"Europe's inability to deal with the migrant crisis has brought even Germany to the limit of its capabilities," he told Der Tagesspiegel newspaper (in German).

Knew the whole thing would start cracking at the seams.

I don't see the issue with that. The new arrivals need to be processed. The processing is different from how you would deal with visitors and EU nationals in that it requires more resources.

If you were expecting them to just let anyone through willy nilly, maybe you were believing your own propaganda a little too much.

The EU only has to allow free movement of its citizens, they can always suspend Schengen for the movement of non-citizens without impacting too much on citizens.

But how do they differentiate without check points, or being accused of racism for pulling over every middle eastern looking person?

Isn't the idea of a check point automatically against free movement?

No, for example there is free movement to and from the UK for EU citizens, but they still have checkpoints. All it means is that the citizen will have to show their passport or ID card to move freely across the borders.

I am sure Germany is completely making sure that all the migrants are genuine asylum seekers who are economically desperate.

Maybe Steve Jobs gave them all free iPhones on account of himself being descendent of a migrant as well ;)

Also Munich is full, spin that as you will.

“We had a total of 12,200 refugees on Saturday ... today we’re expecting several hundreds. Given the numbers from yesterday, it is very clear that we have reached the upper limit of our capacity,” said a police spokesman.

So basically Visa Free? Currently the Eu probably doesn't even know who stays where.

Other than the fact there are 2 iPhones and what likes like 3 Samsungs and a Sony you might have a point ;).

No, they will probably just use the UK system, you prove you are an EU citizen and walk through, no paperwork, no questions.

EU backs German border controls

The EU executive said Germany appeared legally justified in reimposing border controls on Sunday, especially on its Austrian frontier, and said it showed the need for EU states to agree a common approach to refugees.

"The temporary reintroduction of border controls between member states is an exceptional possibility explicitly foreseen in and regulated by the Schengen Borders Code, in case of a crisis situation," the European Commission said in a statement.

"The current situation in Germany, prima facie, appears to be a situation covered by the rules."

It added that the executive would keep the situation under review and said the aim would be to return to the normal situation of no border checks between member states of the Schengen zone "as soon as feasible".

"The German decision of today (Sunday) underlines the urgency to agree on the measures proposed by the European Commission in order to manage the refugee crisis," the Commission said.
