I have just been informed that my exchange has been adsl enabled. I am currently on ISDN.

Do you think I should "upgrade" to ADSL? Any comments or thoughts will be appreceated.

Can you afford it

Check how much you spend on ISDN (Line Rental, subscriptions etc), and how much you downloading. What you going to use it for, browsing, mail, the odd download, or are you going to try download 50 movies, 17 software packages and p0rn0. Answer those questions then we can advise you.

Wait until Telkom stops ripping us off or the arrival of the SNO (could be a very lo-o-o-ng wait). With the crap currently with ADSL it ain't worth it. You can download more with IDSN now and it is not shaped to hell like ADSL. Change only if you need really higher speed and rather go the IS route to get Telkom pushed further down the food chain.

Don't use Telkom as your ISP unless you like the company of piranhas

I also upgraded from ISDN to ADSL at the beginning of this year. My total phone bill was coming to R800.00 per month with ISDN (and infinitcall). Now that I have switched to 384HomeDSL my bill is about R580.00 per month, so I think it was worth it. But having said that getting them to change the ISDN to ADSL was four months of nightmare... at one point I actually tried to cancell the whole process, but Telkom are so inept they could not even cancel my line. Finally got it all sorted out and am now using Axxess with a 5 Gb cap. Remember that with ISDN you should easily be able to get 1 Gb plus downloads per weekend (maybe 6 to 7 GB per month), but with ADSL you are hardcapped (I have a 5Gb cap). Take that into consideration as well. If you want to read the gory details of my experience with telkom, I have it all recorded, send me an e-mail at [email protected].

well i'm still on ISDN, and i was going to upgrade untill i got word of this new per gig pricing:mad: anyway, i'll look at it again in the new year..

and if u're downloading lots ISDN can be cheeper, i downloaded quite a bit in October(a few DVD versions of linux distro's, movies, games, etc), and these are the totals from my ipcop box

Down: 11158.10 MB (11.15GB)
Up: 5643.27 MB (5.64GB)

Total: 16801.3MB (16.8GB)

some weekends i was getting more than 3gb(in & out) I'm on 128k...

:p Yes, I sometimes download 2 gig a weekend with ISDN. If I get ADSL I will definately have to go for at least a 10gig account. Will have to pc's on the router and my son surfs a lot. With ISDN he uses all my bloody bandwith. :p

PS: If I could I would download 50 movies, 17 software packages and p0rn0. :D

If you can live with 3gig cap. Yes.

If you just want 24/7 Internet connectivity and don't care for speed I suggest you get 192 ADSL. If you shop for ISP's you can come in at around R370 per month total...

i rate get dsl, and get 2 accounts, one for downloading (like a telkoms sa account, from what has been said on the forum is that they are not hard capped) and with the downloading account use proxy services, and the other use for browsing,

I reccomend adsl
