Get router to dial broadband connection automatically

Hi All,

I have a buddy who's recently moved to an estate.
The ADSL line is provided by the estate. It is accessd via an ethernet port on the wall.

My buddy plugged his router in and set it up with the username and password he was given by the estate.
He connects to the router fine but he has to create a "broadband connection" on his pc and use the credentiails he was provided with in order to connect to the net.

What he wants to do is have the router automatically dial the connection like you normally do with ADSL.The main reason is so that he can connect his phone to the wifi from the router and use the net.

Router is a D-Link DSL-2750U.

Sounds like he needs a WAN router rather than an ADSL router, if he plugs into an Ethernet port in the wall. Unless the "Ethernet port" happens to be POTS on an RJ42, which is not impossible, I guess. Worth checking the logs on the 2750U to see why it is unable to establish a connection for all the machines on the LAN to use, though.

Just had a chat with a colleague at work and he also suggested the WAN router.

Some ADSL routers can act as a WAN router. They usually allow you to change port 5 to a WAN port or the other way around.

Just check for that before going out and buying a new router.

OK, let's first ask this question:

If he connects it the way you describe, can he successfully establish a connection to the internet from his PC, by creating a new PPPoE connection, and providing his credentials?

If so, it suggests that the router is simply acting as a switch, allowing his PC to send PPPoE packets to whatever device is hiding behind the Ethernet port provided by the estate. The router is not able to create the PPPoE connection to the DSLAM itself, and is simply forwarding packets between interfaces.

This would suggest that a WAN router is indeed the correct solution. (I checked for alternative firmware for the 2750U that would allow configuring one of the LAN ports as a WAN port, but that device does not seem to be supported by OpenWRT or DD-WRT)
