Ever wondered what it would feel like to be the master of your own country? Not just president, but the all powerful master! The king! As king you can do anything, even dethrone yourself and put democracy in your place or even make it a chaotic country where rules are outlawed and the strongest survive.
Imagine a world where you don’t have to rely on Eskom for power but yourself and your subjects slash fellow countrymen…
The idea of independent nation states for the few or even the individual is not new and has been tried, tested and failed on numerous occasions but a new breed of individuals are entering the fray and they come with clout, brains and loads of cash.
Before I tell you about them, let me give you the results of a little informal poll I ran on MyBroadband.
Out of a total voter population of forty seven, 85.11% said yes to the idea, 10,46% said no to the idea and 4.26% said they are unsure as to whether it is something they would go for. The poll question was “If you could live on your own land by your own laws, would you?”. Simple.
Yes it is a small and extremely informal poll, so this is not the statistically representative poll one would use, but this is not a scientific thesis. I am just including it for interest sake.
What is interesting is that an own island or similar idea always comes out tops or close to tops when people are polled. One poll I found online asked visitors to choose between a farmhouse, a castle, a yacht, their own island or a Villa as choices of preferred places to live. The Villa got 40% of the votes and the island came in 2nd with 26%. I assume the villa won because it was more realistically attainable in the minds of most.
Similar results can be found right across the web but the best place to test it would be with your friends.
So what have you got to do if you want to start your own country?
The first step would be to get some space. Some folks opt for virtual spaces in their current countries of residence. In South Africa the mens hostel Sonop at the University of Pretoria I believe once held a form of semi-independence from South Africa or so the legend goes.
Many people annex their bedrooms as children as the independent state of whatever. Maybe the lingering benefits of independence from outside influences like the state or in some cases especially tax gathering institutions around the world is a very good reason to want to just pack your bags and create your own sovereign state. If not, the tax havens have already been created…

2.Declare independence
3.Get recognized
4.Join the club (UN)
So far so good. You know what to do, but what problems could you face?

1.Lack of earth based land to go to with the exception of Antarctica.
2.Existing countries are notoriously edgy about people trying to annex land from them.
3.There is no process set in stone to become a country and it is essentially up to power.
4.It is difficult to find a population for a start-up country. Ask Orania!
It seems doing it will be a tough sell but there are clever folks working on solutions.
Some of the most interesting options I have found include the Artemis Project which is aimed at colonizing the moon. I personally love the idea of space colonization as it is something that will ease the strife on earth considerably in my view. It takes our focus away from ourselves and gives us new collective goals.

It is an interesting effort that plans to use a dysfunctional oil rig to start off with and then expand in (what is currently conceptual) cities in the sea…
