Spam can come in PDF, Word, good old HTML format and the most recent craze – image spam.
According to John Leyden from The Register this form of spam is not very effective but it has the advantage of possibly fooling basic spam filters.
The other drawback is that it takes a great deal of processing power to send out these images but that, according to Net security firm F-Secure, is no problem. These spamming critters appear to have ‘lots of computing power’ at their disposal and use huge botnets to take care of the task.
In order to improve on their chances of catching unsuspecting users, spammers are modifying the images by adding colours, changing fonts and inserting random dots and lines so that they appear to be in ‘three dimensions’.
The result is stomach-turning according to Leyden: “The effect is even less convincing than squinting at Jaws 3D through a pair of coloured glasses. It’s also even more nauseating.”
Image spam could prove to be a costly exercise for South Africans though, who are hamstrung by the high cost of bandwidth. Companies could end up paying thousands for this new trend in spamming.
