Sup guys

Quick one.

We have an 8 year old Jack Russel and I have adopted a 1 year old pitbull.

What would be best way to introduce to two dogs to each other ?

Because last year my father brought home a 3.5 year old labrador and he was huge, and our JR got such a freight when he came around the corner that they fought almost every time, and I am not looking for a such an encounter again.

Any idea or suggestions would be helpful.

Assuming you have a garden:

Put the JR away inside and let the puppy run around outside for a while (an hour or so) to get a bit used to the new smells.

Then let the JR out and ignore the dogs and let them get acquainted with each other - some growling can be expected at this point but this is not a bad thing at all.

You can keep a hose pipe running near by to help with diffusing any fights, should they occur.

Put them together divided by a physical barrier like a trellidoor or gate or something and just let them hang out for a couple of hours like that.

Make the old dog not feel like its being an outsider. So dont come home with the new one and hold it tight and make a big deal etc.

Even terms, at a park, off property so no territorial behavior can ensue.

If they get along at park, walk them together, then take them home together. should do the trick. Did for me anyway. Jack Russells can be absolute ****s though.

Do not just try do this at home for the first meeting.

contrary to above comments the best way to introduce would be away from your own property. Your JR will be territorial and will react accordingly. Most important do not restrain either animal in any way - leads, fences etc With a lead the dog will feel threatened as they will feel unable to escape. With a barrier between them a dog will react aggressively.

Take them both to a park and let them run around, be very vigilant to watch and stop if they do try and attack each other. Keep a blanket or towel to throw over them should they try attack each other, throw it over one and pick them up. This will protect you from accidental bites as well.

After initial meeting you can see how they are with each other and then try bring together at home.

I had a similar situation years back - Had an older staffie then we got a pitbull. The pitbull eventually ended up killing the staffie. As much as i love pits they are a lose cannon and wont trust them around any other dogs.If they snap the other dog is tickets.

This is not the best idea - a lot of dogs will be super aggressive behind a gate.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I will get them to neutral ground, luckily I have a park 4 houses down, unfortunately I don't have any fence or trellidoor to seperate them, so neutral ground would work best.

Much appreciated.

had this exact situation back in the day. we got the pitbull as a puppy. she grew up with the jack russle. they were both in the yard. playing and enjoying themselves. that all changed though. one day when we were in the yard the pitbull just went for the jack russel. locked. it must be one of the worst feelings in the world getting your dog to release your other dog. eventually she did. off to the vet. isolated incident?

nope, happened again. this time though the jack russel hip needed to be popped back in. then we had to chain the pitbull after that. that kill her spirit and a bit of mine. oh it was two females.

and that pitbull wasn't raised to fight. they got the same attention. part of the family. haven't had the heart to get another one since then.
