getting a car in registered in SA

Hi all..

Well im curios to know how to do this..

the car is registered in Botswana ..its in SA now..what steps should be taken to get it registered here and are we talking alot of money or not?

It's a huge process to import it and pretty damn expensive unless you drove it while being in Botswana for 2 years if memory serves. Otherwise, you're looking at hours and hours of struggling and something like 40% import tax.

Rather leave it registered in Bots and go back once a year to re-new the license.

Proof of origin of car
SAPS clearance
Proof of value from an accredited valuer (this can be "fixed")
Proof from SARS that all duties have been paid (and you get charged VAT on top of it all)
Proof of ownership (no outstanding HP)
Roadworthy

The proof of origin can be fiddly, it might seem obvious but the licencing authority has all these rules and regulations. My friend did with her car from Zimbabwe and it took 6 months and cost her about R 14000 for a 2004 Toyota Celica. Hardly worth it.

Its tempting, dont worry it happens to everyone, My Advice just drop it dont try it, you will regret it, and in any case you are not allowed to register a Secondhand car in SA if except if you are immigrating to SA. (Thats if this GTi is secondhand)

I had the same idea to bring in a skyline GTR old spec from Mozambique for +-R50 000 in good nick shipped to mozams harbour from China, untill i had a chat with out logistics import/export manager, its not worth the effort, Sad i know, I paid 300K for a Jeep wrangler rubi 2010, and in the states they cost $350000 brand new out the box!

But if you realy want to still do this there are "loopholes" a car is not considered a car without wheels or axles, so you can then ship it in as parts, and assemble it locally that should cut some cost but you will still be stuck by Re registering it as a built up car.

You could just keep registering it in botswana.

I'm sitting with my bag of popcorn waiting for this side step of the law to blow up and the cops to start confiscating all them illigal cars. If you don't live there, and have no stamps in your passport to prove that you regularly go there (if you have an address, or claims to own a business,then you have to at least go there SOMETIME), you are walking a thin line.
I know they did confiscate a bunch of cars a few years back, but it is getting to be a big scam again...so it is just time.
