I am thinking of getting a Comptia A+. Is it worth getting, as I have some computer knowledge and experience but no formal qualification to apply for a job. Also does anyone have any suggestions as to which study material is the best and if its worth paying for the online courses or go for classes or will the study material be enough.

Umm.. A+ is vastly outdated. If you have any computer knowledge its probably going to hamper your efforts.

Any qualification is good, always.

But, the question more is, what is your aim doing the qualification, is it mainly to get a job in the IT field ?

In my view, what I would do is attempt to get a job, without the qualification. This is difficult, very difficult, but, I found what works well is if you tell that employer, you will work 3 to 6 months, for free, to get experience.

Now don't shoot me, I know it sounds ludicrous, working for free, and especially if no-one else can support you, but if it is possible, do it. The reason, you don't waste time doing courses for a year or two, you start working immediately. That has the added advantage that you can feel out if this is a type of job that you would like to do. The IT industry is hard, and it is not for everyone, you need to want to do it. I have known about more than 50 persons at least that had degrees, diplomas all sorts of qualifications, and once they started, they hated it, and pursued other jobs. That is then a big waste of time and cost getting the qualifications.

But, doing the qualification if you can't land a job, is definately better than doint nothing.

But, be sure, it is not easy to get your foot in the door, and if someone gives you that chance, work yourself to the bone to make it count. Don't slack or be difficult. Employers can pick and choose, they will only tolerate slackness if you mean something to them, in experience and what you can bring. Get you mind right regarding this all before you start.

To add on to the OP, I am currently in Finances, but always wanted to improve my IT knowledge and perhaps one day make a change to that area. Where would be a good place to start?

With A+?

Unless you can do it very cheaply I wouldn't spend money on A+.

You'd probably do better trying some of the free courses on EdX.
