Getting a fixed IP

I know that telscum is completely against having fixed IP's on their ADSL service - i have also heard that IS provides a VPN-over-ADSL system so that their business customers can get fixed IP addresses through the ADSL system.

Now my question -
Does IS or any of the other ISP's provide this sort of VPN to static netblock product as a separate service? And if not - who else would be interested in such a product??

The price for a fixed IP, according to me ;) , is too expensive. I'm using www.dyndns.org , and it works like a charm. My modem uploads it IP every time it changes. I've opened a tunnel on it to allow me to run a FTP server at home, magic!

I'm also using DynDNS for FTP and some other stuff - but unfortunately there are some types of servers that are impossible to run on a dynamic IP address.

DNS server cannot be hosted on dynamic IP's as this breaks a number of their core functionalities as well as not having the required 'glue' within the domains to link the forward and reverse lookups.

Also most ADSL address ranges are on RBL's (blacklists) which makes those IP's completely useless for any sort of SMTP server setup.

PeekNPoke: who provides this static IP service that you say is too expensive??

The only way I can find to get a static ip is to go with uncapped - now for R1400 or so per month, this is ridiculous. I would like to have a static ip on a normal capped account - do not mind having to buy the cisco router outright if this is a problem.

ditto - this is exactly what i'm looking for and it looks like i'm not the only one.
Any comment from our IS resellers - Clipse... anyone?

As long as said static IP is not on any black lists so that you can manage an SMTP server on it... which I'm looking for as well.

Diginet's fine and dandy, but a tad too expensive, and slow.

The most important thing for this account is the security I can get. At the moment, my server must be open to the whole IS ADSL 196.x.x.x address space, simply because my IP changes at a whim. If I had the static IP, I could set the firewall accordingly.

The only way we can offer an static ip is via our local vpn with reverse NAT, the problem however, all traffic to the static ip will travel over our VPN, back and forth, and the VPN cost involved isnt attractive enough for this.

Well lets talk ballpark figures here - because this seems to be the only other option besides uncapped IS-ADSL at R1400 pm and i'm keen to see what you can offer us.

At this moment in time the server in the fixed IP will hardly be pushing 500mb per month - i'm sure you can come up with something that can compete against 64k diginet??

If you would only need 500MB per month, then the pricy could actually work for you. We have a few clients setup'd this way. Basicly you would be looking at R150 for 500MB and then a couple of Rand extra (will need to find out exact price, if any) for the static ip allocation.

Drop me an email if your interested.
