Like the title says, I have to know what I can do to promote a website on Google. At the moment it seems that meta-tags and keywords are not doing much, so what are all the options out there available to someone who needs to at least get on the first page when they search?

Hey Myworld,

A few things that can help would be:

- Google Adwords is the best way to get your site seen adwords.google.com/

- Getting your website link on more high ranking websites, sites with a lot of traffic.

- Content, the opening paragraph of each page on your website is important, make sure it is relevant so that Googles spiders find the info that your searchers want to find.

- Hire someone to manage your search engine optimization for you, or at least give you advice on how to improve, SEO companies are finding great ways of improving ranking. Just make sure it is not black hat, Google can make your site vanish off from their searches if they catch you trying to improve your ranking illegally.

This also might give you some ideas: http://www.searchme.co.in/2007/06/simple-to-shamelessly-illegal-ways-to.html

Those are just a few things that can help, I am no guru though.

Does google analytics not help a little as well ?

Analytics helps you track and refine your methods but does not drive traffic to your site... as far as I am aware.

If you have tons of content on your site (like articles, news, blog entries, etc) you must consider having a Title tag that accurately describes the content of the page in as few words as possible. Also, setting up search engine friendly urls, preferably with the page title as part of the link, usually contributes to a higher page rank.

So you create an Ad that shows up on Google AdSense?
Why does that not sit well with me...

Thanks for each and every reply so far, I'm looking into all the options mentioned.

@OP, are you looking to get into paid-for or natural SEO?
Whatever will help me get the page listed at least on the first page of results.

Of course natural would be better saving a few $$$, but if there should be some money spend so be it.
