Getting a new PC this month

Whats this nonsense about the V8 performing poorly? My load temps are a max of 18-20° above ambient (full load Intelburntest). I tried to OC my chip as well to 3.8ghz, and temps still maxed out at 23° above ambient. Thats with the fan turned on medium. Not that I'm against the Hyper 212 (except that it is not in stock anywhere, at least nowhere that I have looked).

"COOLERMASTER CPU COOLER V8 performs fairly poorly considering the price.

HYPER 212+ or COGAGE TRUE SPIRIT is what you want, half the price and both perform better."

EDIT: Requires the AM2 kit for R75. Still cheaper than the V8.

OMS, is that how much a V8 costs in SA?? ±R625?? No wonder nobody likes it, I got mine for R350 so I'm happy. And I'm getting the cogage for a i7 930 thats on the way, very good value cooler

no need to get a 6 core pu, stick with the Phenom 965 BE

Yeah I was just looking at what might be more realistic at this point. I think I'll stick with the 965. Maybe OC it a little bit. I think I have my mind set now. I'll consider the other cooler dudewotevr mentioned though.

Just one more thing I need to be certain about- Currently I have an Odin 720 Watt PSU. Would that be sufficient to power two 5850s in Crossfire along with the Phenom 965? If I'm not mistaken you can have two 5850s in Crossfire with a 600 Watt PSU with 4 x 6 pin connectors? So 720 should be plenty, I hope..

Should be fine, though that PSU does not have enough PCI connectors. You will need some adaptors to convert the 4 pin plugs into 6 pins

Yeah I got them with my first 5850 so I should get some more. If not I'll just buy them.

For those looking at the Cogage True as your CPU cooler, it uses those silly push pins to mount to the motherboard :( If I'm going to buy an aftermarket cooler I expect it to have a backplate, especially if it weighs over 500g. Sigh, back to the drawing board for me.

It is not recommended that you use molex-6pin converters.

Get yourself a decent 80+ certified psu(Thermaltake Toughpower or Corsair HX) 750W-850W

Ah no ways man ... :/

Its not recommended because you are using 4 wires instead of 6 to provide the power. But you are only powering a 5850, not exactly the most power hungry GPU, should be fine.

It should be fine to use connectors on a 5850. You have 3 wires coming from each of the 2 molex connectors (yellow 12v and the 2 blacks (ground)) . This is fine as 6pins only draw from the 12v rail. It is always recommended to plug the adapter molex into separate cables, thus you need 4 cables from your PSU.. You can get away with 2, but not recommended :)

I decided to go for another motherboard. I went for the MSI GD70 790FX. The price difference is about R 1300. I looked at some performance graphs and bench tests between this MSI and the ASUS Crosshair board and they seem to have negligible differences in performance. The ASUS however allows for some crazy overclocking headroom, but since I won't be doing much overclocking I figured this is the much better option for me. Same performance, less price. Saving about R 1300 is quite a bit of money.

Good choice, generally OC is the biggest differentiator with similar chipset boards.

Archer's wrong:

For R359 you can get it for 1366 (with backplate) or 775 (with backplate), and the AM2 backplate costs R75.

The Cogage even including the R75 AM2 backplate is R434 total.

Some reviews: (NOTE: some of them are with the old push-pin system and still own)

Like I said in the other thread I looked at the manufacturers product page. Not my fault they do not update their website.
