Getting a powered USB hub into my car

I need to get a powered USB hub into my car - Ideally as small as possible - no more than 2/3 ports...

Any suggestions on how? I'm assuming the hub would need to be 12V?

Reason being, my radio supports a 3G dongle - and USB flash drives, but doesn't seem to output enough power to power both.

I've also read that using a powered hub increases the reliability of the 3G connection. (Android radio, 3G drops frequently on startup and requires a restart).

You can get them at any cellphone store :)
I paid R99 for one a vadacom store which has a 2.1A output for charging my phone and a 1A output which i use for my dash cam.

Not quite - because that would then have the hub and all the cables outside the dash - rather unneat - I want everything in the dash - and out of the way... probably should have mentioned that.

Is this what you are looking for?

Carnetix_CNX-P5USB_DC-Powered_4-Port_USB_Hub_inbox_product.jpg

The CarNetix CNX-P5USB is a DC-powered 4-port USB hub designed for automotive or embedded DC-powered applications.

The P5USB includes and internal DC-DC regulator so that each of the 4 USB ports can provide up to 500mA of current to the downstream USB devices.

The P5USB can be used in either a +12V or +24V automotive environment. It will operate down to 7V (survives engine cranking) and can withstand voltage transients typically found in a harsh automotive environment.

The DC input includes reverse polarity protection, transient suppression, and an internal in-line, self-resetting fuse. A self-locking power cable is included.

The P5USB can be turned ON or OFF either by the car's ignition line or by sensing the presence of +5V on the upstream host USB device (PC).

This helps prevent battery discharge when the PC is left in Standby for extended periods of time.

The P5USB includes an Shutdown Delay jumper which can be set to allow the P5USB to remain on for either 5 minutes or 25 minutes after the Ignition is turned off.

This prevents the loss of USB connectivity during short stops if the PC is left running.

Yeah agreed, but where would you source the power, splice a cable?

Yeah - that would work - but damn expensive

Yes - probably splice a cable somewhere.

The nice thing about using a hub also tidies up the cubbyhole - at the moment I have 3 cables going to the headunit - and looks rather a mess...

If you have a hub, you have one power cable and one USB cable, which you can cable tie together... and then the devices plug into the hub directly.

I assume you can use something like this to double the power to 1A:

It's the kind of thing Linkqage would stock.
